US Anti-Doping Agency charges Armstrong

Do we think PED's are this prominent in most other sports: Pro Football, Pro Baseball (well we know about a few well known names); Basketball; Tennis; Golf; Boxing;

In cycling, the PEDs give you a one to one relationship with results. It takes ZERO skill to ride a bike, imagine the skill set needed to hit a baseball at 100mph.

If you watch cycling in person, it is obvious it takes a lot of skill to ride a bike the way they do, especially on smaller closed courses where everyone is on top of each other.

I guess it takes even less skill to run in the 100 meter or marathons or anything in between!

You have made a lot of good points. I disagree there. I have broken my arm and been hit by a car three times. I've raced criteriums and ridden mountain roads Riding a club race takes considerable skill.

Try riding a bike down a mountain at 40-60 mph in a group of 40 riders. Drugs may have given Lance the edge. He still had to work his ass off and have considerable luck to avoid crashes. Let's not forget he shattered his collarbone. I know its dump on Lance season. Keep it in perspective.

Gary, it takes practice, not skill. Two very different things. Cycling (road racing) is about body type and time invested in training. In fact it's all about training, this a learned practiced set from other riders and coaches. No matter how much basketball I play or practice I could never play in the NBA. In cycling, I train and race with pros and x Olympians. I'm a good average type athlete and road cycling, trust me, takes no special skill set. It takes lots of balls though!

If it only took training I would be an elite cyclist. Racing Requires skill.Gear selection. Cornering and breaking skills. Knowing when to chase a breakaway. Knowing when to get in the breakaway.Figuring out which rider is actually trying to win the race as opposed to being a rabbit. Knowing when to draft and when to get out front. And finally knowing when to launch your winning attack, which is more often than not a crap shoot. Even After riding the perfect race some lessor known rider sat on your wheel (protected from the wind) and passed you in the last 15 meters.

Those are just a few of the things you have to worry about.

Peter ,

Forget the NBA, no matter how much training you did , you would not make it as a pro rider
And while cycling doesn't require hand to eye, it does require a lot of bike control when attacking and sprinting around turns and racing other bikers , if not everyone would be a tour rider with training and thats not so ..

A few decades ago they had an athletic competition on TV in the Netherlands. Professional athletes from various sports competed in a various disciplines, requiring upper and lower body strenght, endurance and coordination. Winners were the best all round athletes. The cyclists consistently came in last..... I believe the field Hockey players (very popular in the Netherlands) did extremely well.

Not surprised , I bet no nba or baseball players entered too ..! :)

its why i played tennis and TT, when cycling. Cycling doesn't work enough of your other body muscles . I did have a soccer player friend who wanted to start cycling , i gave him his training scheduled and told him to give himself a year before coming out with us , he laughed and called me up 6 weeks later , telling me he was ready ...:)

He got dropped about 10miles into our 60 mile training ride ....!:)

I would last 15 minutes on the bike at high pace, but played 3 hours squash no problem in my younger days (may be 1.5 hour now). They are all very different workouts.

Being on the US Postal team was one of the most coveted jobs in cycling. Many passed up the up the opportunity to be the leader of lessor teams. In fact they were leaders of lessor teams when the left US Postal. US Postal changed riders to accommodate the different courses that were designed to defeat Lance Armstrong.

I finally decided to watch Lance Armstrong.
He did test positive for EPO based on retroactive drug tests. I see no reason why USADA could not rely on those positive tests.
I'll comment further after tomorrows interview. My preliminary opinion was he was not forthcoming.

Greg, IME most cheaters aren't forthcoming. I'm still trying to figure out if the little Chinese swimmer at the Olympics last year was cheating...Nah, she just happened to have a miraculous burst of speed, LOL.
IMO, if one were to look at Lance's remarkable results....particularly since he seemed to come out of nowhere, you could wonder how he gained this almost super-human ability....at least I did at the time and
concluded drugs had to be a factor. Sort of goes to "if it's too good to be true". But then I'm a true cynic when it comes to these kinds of events. Anyone want to bet what happens to Mr Bolt in the future..;)
