So all of these verizon rumors about iPhone were really about iPad. Verizon will be selling it but not as a cellular device. You would use your own phone/Verizon device below as a gateway to the Internet (wifi to 3G). Pretty kludgey. People are expecting this to lead to an iPhone on Verizon but that remains a stretch still. Note how Jobs is not being used to quote this release (as to not make AT&T upset).

The only reason to believe that they will do an iPhone is the rumor that AT&T contract runs out end of this year. Other than that, I would say we still have no data that tells us that is going to happen.

As to using an iPhone, a Verizon customer doesn't have one to use as a gateway!

I still firmly believe that verizon will be offering the iphone

Me too. Particularly w/Android gaining marketshare, Apple has great incentive to make it happen. I think this iPad agreement is just a paver for an iPhone agreement.

Adding Walmart, Target and now Verizon as iPad retailers is part of the strategy to flood the market with units before the competition can take hold. It's somewhat opposite of how they rolled out the iPhone via a single vendor.

Amir,

Like Steve, I too believe that an iPhone is coming to Verizon as soon as their network is ready. The business reasons are just too compelling to ignore. It seems to me that it will more likely be the end of first quarter next year when their LTE network starts to come online and when they will have allegedly made the CDMA modifications that will allow for simultaneous data and voice transmission, which is not possible presently. Even though that is not a major feature functionally, it is a big selling point that would put a target on Verizon's forehead for AT&T to aim for.

The fact that there is now a business relationship between Apple and Verizon, shows that both sides have gotten over the obstacles that prevented the iPhone from going to Verizon initially. Unless one needs a world phone, it is pretty clear that even now, Verizon offers better service in NA. All one has to do is speak with someone on an iPhone to see just how bad the AT&T network is in reality.

As a Mac user, none of the Droid or Blackberry variants cut it for me.

This first announcement from Verizon is the first salvo. If you think they will carry the iPad without selling the iPhone then .........stay tuned.

Remember iPhone V for the next version representing both iPhone version 5 And V for Verizon.

You are now speaking as a Microsoft exec. As I said I bought a $20 app called MyWi that tethers my iPhone to my iPad and costs no monthly fees. I assure you that if this won't work on the Verizon network there will be a version to follow that does.

you need an unlocked iPhone to buy and install it. Once installed it tethers your iphone to your ipad . Thus you don't have to buy a 3G iPad thus saving you $16/month for AT&T data services. The program cost me $20
