Taiko Audio XDMS - Extreme Direct Music Server Software

Ciao Simone, interessante! I hope your right, 1 year 2 years, 3 years? Chi lo sa? With all that is going on, along with things that need to take place with the router (firmware update) etc. I suspect it will be sometime, I hope I'm wrong!

I cannot predict the timeline to beta but Ed’s team is separate from everything else going on at Taiko. I also think Taiko outsourced the router firmware work so that shouldn’t have an effect on XDMS either.

The downside of all this for us alpha testers is that Taiko seems decided to release XDMS for Olympus only when fully stable and objectively superior to Roon, that could take a SIGNIFICANT time to happen (1+ years).

FWIW, once you hear the Olympus with Roon, you will probably never even think this is a downside.

Wondering what would the "local file playback only" (in Extreme) group do in the meantime when using Olympus?

Why would that be an issue with Roon?

In my system, the SQ improvements with the latest version of XDMS are absolutely stunning. The immediacy, the separation of voices and instruments, the blackness of the background, and the exquisitely defined low end, all are by far the best I have ever heard.

Kudos to Ed and the XDMS development team.

Do you mean folder navigation (i.e. not via metadata)? I think old mustang wrote that too now supports this (it didn't before). Since I don't use roon, I have no personal insights

I meant people using Taiko's playback app to play local files instead of Roon.

When using an Olympus to play back local files you'd use Roon.

XDMS is not supported on Olympus (yet). Also, there are cautions in the Olympus user manual on-line that user-loaded third party software on Olympus is not recommended or supported, and if unsanctioned third party software proves problematical Taiko support may charge support fees to correct the situation.

XDMS just keeps getting better and better. Latest control app and back end here (thank you Ed!) and additional improvements in clarity, imaging, micro detail and overall tonality. This is making it very easy to wait patiently for the Olympus. Just absolutely smitten with the sound quality as it is. Hats off again Taiko, Ed and the unsung software coders.

I must admit that I totally agree. I have been getting in the last few days of listening to XDMS 3.0.2 ( +1) with my Extreme as my O/IO shipped today and although @nenon said one wont despair listening to Roon with the Olympus (and Im sure he's correct) I really do prefer XDMS. The man hours put in by Ed and his team are indeed monumental, so Im hoping I don't have withdrawal symptoms as I await XDMS for the Olympus. I also will miss being a part of the alpha test group and cant thank Ed enough for all of the help he has given me these past few years. I know people have been betting against a finished XDMS product but I personally believe in all things Taiko as well as knowing that all good things come too he who waits. Bravo Ed and his coders. Ed has filled me in on some of the things they are working on in XDMS and for my novice mind I find them to be somewhat mind boggling. Kudos to all

Steve Williams, you are a tease! Pray tell, what did Ed tell?!

ask him. I don't think it's a secret. I talk to Ed frequently. He's an amazing man with so many worldly experiences. I commonly ask him where XDMS is headed and AFAIK they are working on some of these things now but I just don't feel it's my prerogative to discuss it here on open forum.

Big thanks to Ed @EuroDriver (Emile @Taiko Audio and all responsible humans) who did a late night install of the latest XDMS backend. Before bed I listened to a few tracks but was much too sleepy to assess. This afternoon into early evening I am sitting here reveling in the beauty of and connection to the music pouring out of my speakers. I don’t have my usual desire to explain in audiophile terms the improvements. Just in a dreamy state of audio bliss :)

Its sort of mind boggling what software does to playback. Do you need a $350k stack to have the pinnacle of digital playback. Or could a well designed far less expensive package with the right software sound much better.

Software is incredibly important, I would agree you could indeed spend unlimited resources on hardware and end up being out performed by much cheaper hardware combined with “smarter” or “better” software.

Unfortunately software development nowadays can easily surpass hardware costs (development and parts combined), with visibility limited to a user interface at best, which isn’t even an indicator of expense.

For digital sources, in a market which is for a large part focused on box count/appearance/weight, this is a particular difficult aspect to bring to people’s attention.
