Visit to Audiophile Bill to hear his horns project

dunno. I like those speaker cables btw but not tried them in horn systems

They sound fabulous in the SoundLab's, their balance is perfect for these speakers. They are not neutral at all - some people will find them too rich or even mellow. But they present layers of detail in a natural way with great bass and liquid medium treble. Great soundstage too.

Mark Mikelson excellent review of the Crystal Dreamlines is only available at the Google cache: http://webcache.googleusercontent.c...ble_dreamline.htm&hl=en&gl=pt&strip=1&vwsrc=0

I quote from the review "I like it, that golden sound. Contrary to popular belief, I think it leads to greater realism. Life doesn't sound physically lean and tonally threadbare, at least to my ears. The question with Dreamline is if there's too much mellowness -- if it's too additive. I suspect that in isolation, most listeners won't think it is, while in comparison to other cables, it might be."

I have written a big article on the general’s system with the pnoe and mentioned my love for the system a few times outside that. Bill just got his in yesterday it will take a few months of what I mentioned in post 991 to get it there.
General has BD4s or BD5s? I know there is a huge difference in price but not clear on the sound level improvement.

We started listening to BD4s at the General, then jumped to BD5 which waa quite an upgrade. Bill also heard the BD3B I didn't at G but did at Greg’s, and Bill said BD3B to BD4 was an upgrade. G moved up from BD5 too but if I had the money BD5 would be ultimate for me. Murat stopped at BD4 for his 2 way + sub he didn't go to BD5 though he has the money but his are not pnoe.

I was chatting to him on and off yesterday , they look rather fabulous in his room,

I think despite the size the white and the curves are pretty elegant

Apparently his wife likes the look of them, something he didn’t think would happen when he got them in. In fact he told her a couple of days after he committed that he was getting them.

What an interesting turn of events, those Pnoe horns must be awesome to prefer them over his speakers.
I think I know how this ends: Bill spends years building a wood version of the Pnoe horn and comissions a custom made field coild driver for it with a custom power supply made by Thomas Mayer. That would be epic ;)

Bill started his project after loving the Pnoes to try and recreate the Pnoe sound at lower cost for himself (via DIY) and to if possible extend it like Murat did with bass horns. However both of us began to appreciate more the benefits of a single driver done well.

Thanks Ked for keeping us up to date… Bill’s is such an awesome journey, such twists and turns, how fantastic!

This is not a speaker for everyone. It is mainly for classical and jazz and blues and mainly with good to great records and the whole chain bang on. Similarly, the Mayer 46 and Vyger Red Sparrow combination is a prima donna as well.

For more general and wider accepted used, I would recommend DaVa with Altecs especially if some rock is part of the diet. That said when General played a ZZ top and a Led Zep record I was over the moon but I understand why Marc wouldn't like it with his prog rock records and why he should get a DaVa and an Altec

Now we know a bit better why Bill was willing to let this thread go away. Hopefully the bass towers are still in development and we'll get to see them reinforcing the PNOE bottom end one day.

Just found that the Pnoe standard wiring is my long time favorite Crystal silver gold, as used in the Crystal Dreamline cables. Did Bill get this wiring?

bills is the Arcadian pnoe so it has Crystal cable as standard

They don’t have to be there. Single driver is the magic. It is not just about extensions it is about wholeness, coherence, and the dynamic range as notes soar through where a crossover will be is unbeatable. Also speed is incredible with very low watt amps. There is actually as little in the signal path as can be possible. Which is also why it varies a lot with the set up

Indeed. But of course Bill has years of experience within the paradigm and still wanted to add the bottom end a month ago.

Perhaps the Pnoe ended that, but you clearly stated that the speaker is missing something for all types of music.

One can always turn bass reinforcement on and off of course.

Getting it to match such a long horn in phase and time is a big challenge

Everything is a compromise, in a best case scenario he could have AER to build a 15' driver with the same materials as the one used in the Pnoe, and then build a separate horn with the same topology and materials as the Pnoe's that goes down to 20hz (which would be ridiculously huge and impractical) and physically time align them in the same room. That would be the most purist approach, and would still require a crossover.
