Has anyone heard the SAS (Steve Sammit) tube amps? Steve brought them by my house a couple of weeks ago to audition with the new VSA VR33 speakers. I was very impressed.
Steve-This is a stereo amp so he is only using one output tube per channel. But still, if a pair of those bad boys cost $700 then I guess the amp is free. It actually is a nice looking amp for the money and who knows, maybe the damn thing sounds real good. Maybe we could import them and change the faceplate and charge $7K per amp.
I think the transformers are made from sawed up engine blocks wound with wire stripped from Florida foreclosure properties. He never said it came with tubes.
I will quickly bow out of this discussion. I know nowadays close to nothing about tubes . I used to know a few things about tubes, even had (from my Dad) Tube Testers but not anymore ... My tastes and needs have changed so .. I know however that one can find GM-70 for much, much less than $700 ...
How do those compare to the ones sold at 700 a pair? I don't know and those knowledgeable in tubes will chime in. Places like Tube Depot (www.tubedepot.com) sell them for a very reasonable 89.95 each .. I am sure they make a profit on these ...
So this amp can use GM-70 and still sell for $700. Tubes circuits are public domains and available all over the Internet ... I have my doubt about the quality of the transformer but this is again a prejudice.. We all know nothing about this amp.. Unless someone here has auditioned it ...
AFAIK there are only two basic types of GM70s, the standard ones you see in tubedepot and the like (also the ones provided in the ML3) in stock form and the rare ones which are copper plates. The latter can fetch much higher than $700 each. Think twice of that for a matched pair.
I know Stevie is tight with Vladimir so I wouldn't be surprised if our Admin snagged only one of three pairs Comrade Sushurin has had stashed.
He says he using toroidal output transformers but I wonder if they are the two tuna cans sticking out on the rear panel. Seems like a 30 watt output transformer for a single-ended amp would have to be pretty beefy.
