What's Spinning Tonight?

Had a Marianne Faithful LP festival, from her slightly smacked out early ingenue phase to her grittier later stuff. Then, on to Eurythmics and Annie Lennox.

I've been listening to mainly Jazz today (with a bit of Classical and Blues), and now somehow I bifurcate from all of that ::

Just won this recently from the UK, 1st press. Looked NM, plays excellent with noticeable surface noise between tracks and occasional light crackles during the few quiet times on this album. The dynamics are thunderous along with deep extended bass and cracking drums. I will need to hear my Rino reissue for comparison. I can't remember how it sounded.

So, was I right about the quality of this recording? It is amazing, isn't it?
PS, I don't know about the Rhino, which I assume is a later reissue, but i have a Warner green label first, an early WWA UK that used the Vertigo matrices, and the first press Vertigo was far more immediate and dynamic. I also really like the other three, self-titled, Master of Reality and Vol 4 on Vertigo.

other than what I described, I felt my pressing was lacking a little sparkle/air on the top end. I have a tape loop and added +1dB shelf eq on my Millennia at 16k. It brought it even more to life. It's rare when I use eq, but I tried it for side B I enjoyed it even more. I am headed down to hear the reissue on Rhino.

It didn't take long to pick the best version I have. The Rhino had more air/treble extension but failed miserably in every other category... The bass region, drums and overall dynamics just aren't there.

I did a little research, Kevin Gray did the Rhino from the Warner master, apparently a little tipped up, more detail, but the Warner green label was itself never considered comparable to the Vertigo UK. I have at least two Vertigo UK first presses of Paranoid, one was a cheapie that looked ugly but sounded fine, the other was a fairly pristine copy- no complaints re lack of air but I'll go back and listen to them both again. Huge drive and clarity, without sounding bright. I suppose it is possible that the copy you got had some wear which might explain both the attenuated high frequency info as well as the noise.
The WWA (UK) copies that use the Vertigo matrices sound good, are 1/3 the price (or less) than the Vertigos but don't have the same energy and drive.

The guys over at the SHForums turned me on to this, and for $8.99 at Sundazed Records I couldn't resist getting a copy for myself. It arrived today, gave it a quick Spin-Clean action, and cued her up. It's no audiophile pressing, although its a very nice 180g pice of vinyl, but I like it. Hit me with the music and I'm happy...this does that.
