The House Of Love – A Spy In The House Of Love - 1990 - the best HOL album that was not even an album - a compilation album of abstract singles, b sides and songs from the cutting room floor from 1988/89.
This is insanely good and sounds like an complete album - Love II thru V are so cool. still sounds superb today.
John Coltrane’s My Favorite Things is definitely one of my favorite things, no pun intended. The opening track with his alto sax gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. Sheer genius. What he does with this tune from The Sound of Music reminds me of the famous scene from the movie Amadeus where Mozart makes fun of Salieri, his nemesis court composer and favorite of the Emperor who composes a little ditty in honor of Mozart’s first visit to the court. Mozart who memorized the tune in an instant plays impromptu many variations. Coltrane on this track does the same. He’s thumbing his nose at the famous composers of The Sound of Music, Rodgers and Hammerstein, saying is this all you could do? He goes through a dizzying array of variations those composers never thought of. A jazz classic and one of the greatest examples of musical creativity of the 20th century. If he lived in the 18th century, he’d have impressed Beethoven.
