Why, oh why, does vinyl continue to blow away digital?

Did you actually compare them to each other in the same system, each of those turntables to the DAC?

In each case, what did you prefer about the Digital to the vinyl?

A well set up fairly simple TT can indeed sound better then most digital.

What im saying is that i have heard Monstrosities of expensive enginering with mediocre sound .

In case of the nagra i dont even wanna comment at as to how bad it was.

When you re asking 2 or 3 hundred K for a TT i expect to be impressed to say the least.

The whole goal seems to be to design expensive feats of enginering.
Because there are enough rich audiophiles who want a magazine triple A rated/ approved engineering trophy in their home.

Over this anytime based on SQ .
i think the Wilson Benesch is something special. the real deal. but at a very high price. not personally heard it.

no opinion about the others.

obviously i do think very highly of my Wadax. but head to head with good media the WB is quite a ways better. preferences for overall use a different question. lots of ways to view it.

Can you elaborate?
Good question, Peter. And an important topic, IMO. But a topic like this can easily derail a thread.

So in short I’ll just say, where others’ hearts go pitter-patter every time somebody mentions the “gold” standard i.e. live unamplified music in an acoustic space, they always seem to overlook or ignore two things…

1. The acoustic space part.

2. The fact that in our rooms are systems with very real shortcomings/limitations that will wreak sonic havoc on certain passages or notes. Including and especially on the acoustic space part.

How do you know it’s really special if you haven’t heard it? ;)

it's perfectly fair to question my opinion. i said i 'think', not that i 'know' since i heard it.

my feelings are based on public (Fremer's review) and private comments to me comparing the Wilson Benesch favorably to my Esoteric T1 but with more authority. THAT get's my attention.

I am just giving you friendly grief. :) I also heard Fremer liked it quite a bit.

Just a quick note, that relates to gear that hasn't been heard or auditioned in person... similar episode happened to a very good mate of mine (addicted to hifi). He was blown away by the glowing reviews from JV and a handful of others. Then he actually bought this speaker system, the one and only MG series to reach Aus Down unda. And he returned the entire system back to the dealer. None other than the Maggie 30.7's!

1. Didn't have a dedicated room.
2. Didn't have the right amplifiers.
3. Got too carried away with all the hype.

Sadly he doesn't post here anymore and his account was deleted. We're still good mates though and keep in touch often. He learned his lesson the real hard way. Now he treads very cautiously and is quite weary of all the hype... Much more sense!
Cheers, RJ

Never trust or waste time on a review from an opinionated only mag , its all talk with no measurements to counter claims ..!

I reall
if i get a chance it is a tt i would love to hear. but beyond my grasp to own. happy with my T1.
I really Like Japan products, the best turntables in the history were from Japan.
Enjoy T1

This is an old mono recording that I've been listening to on Apple Music. Interestingly, I hear a clear pre-echo like you get with vinyl. Could this have been transfered from vinyl to digital? It sounds really good to me. I just noticed the pre-echo during a short silence.

Pre-echo ? Like when your cartridge is not correctly aligned ?

Perhaps. I've heard it on LP, where the sound of the neighboring groove slightly leaks through. Can cartridge alignment do anything about it? But analog tape might have the same problem. The tape is wound on top of itself, which means the magnetic information could transfer. I've never heard it on digital recordings before, and I don't see how the digital process could cause the effect. This was definitely an analog recording originally, and this digital sound file was converted from tape or LP. I don't hear any pops or scratches, but they could have been edited out.

Sounds like he is describing Tape print thru..
I'm guessing that's it. I've never noticed it before on a streaming file or CD. I wonder if it's really all just tape print through that gets transferred to the vinyl. I'd have to listen to digital mastered vinyl and see if it's still there.
