YG Acoustics

Chuck, I went back and read my posts, please point out to me where I said the A5s were better than any YG please? I didn't mean that with any of my posts, but after re-reading them I can't find where I said that.

Here is what I actually said-

"I'm not saying it's better than YG or other Magico speakers"
When you write in a YG Acoustics thread that a 45" tall $22K speaker stacks up to any other speaker, it seems that is what you are saying.

I have heard many speakers similar to the A5 including my excellent $6K Paradigm 30th Anniversary Tributes (45" tall, 3 way, 5 driver, Be tweeter), which I suspect would stack up well against the A5. I even connected the Paradigms to the Boulder 3060 a couple of weeks ago just to see how good they really are -- amazing for their size and cost. However, not in the XV's league.

I'm sure the A5s are terrific speakers and I can't wait to hear them, if there are ever shows again. I also look forward to YG's efforts with Cambridge Acoustic Sciences -- I expect an A5 competitor.

can you also comment on the depth and width of the stage? i am asking because i find them to be lacking in that department. and also because this is not the right thread.

Hi mcduman,

I answered your question over on the A5 thread.

You are so right this is NOT the right thread to be talking about A5s. I agree. I would be happy to share my thoughts and actual listening experience regarding A5s in this A5 thread.

Chuck,

My mistake, I NEVER should have posted in this YG thread. Again, apologies. I did not ever try to compare the A5's with the YG speakers. If you go back and look you will see that the S3II and S5II were being talked about vs. YG. I just happen to have the first hand listening experience with both of those speakers as well as the A5. My intention was only about the S3/S5's vs the A5s, nothing to do with YG.

There is an A5 thread that I just posted or do a search for anyone that is interested in the A5s. I will bow out from this YG thread completely and again sorry for posting here.

From what i can see from pics is that both YG and rockport use scanspeak illuminator magnet / motor systems .
Yg has their custom billet core membrane and rockport their carbon fiber composite membrane used with this motor .
Wilson uses the complete units it looks like .
So most are collaborations .

I don't want you to bow out. I like the discussion about Magico and really want to hear the A5s. I want to hear the M9s too. I would not have heard about the A5 if you had not posted here. I might want to replace the 'digms that are now almost 9 years old. And the A5s are now on the list to audition.

For my part, please post as much as you like about Magico here. Don't get upset if you get some pushback though. This hobby is supposed be fun so as Crash Davis said, let's have some fun.

And that most likely also explains for a large part the "low "efficiency of speakers who use those drive systems.

Chuck, I've lived through all of the Q, M, S and A series prior to the A5s. I ordered A5s just as a natural evolution of the A line thinking I would be getting a better A3.

I received the A5, and I literally could not believe what I was hearing. It's not big dynamics or high res grabbing instant attention. It's when you sit and listen and hear things so far back in the soundstage as I've literally never heard before.

So then I started asking Alon and Peter from Magico, WTF is going on here. It was explained to me that the technology from the M9s that had been realized and provided performance that Magico has never achieved prior was, as in Alon's true to form, was inserted into the next speaker in line, which happened to be the A5.

I instantly realized everything had changed for me. What I thought of the "Magico sound" prior to hearing the A5s no longer existed. It was enough for me to order M9s, which I had ZERO intention of doing prior to hearing the A5s. I've since already sold a pair of M9s and working on another sale as well.

Anyway, the A5 is not just another speaker imho, it's not like an S5 after and S3 or and S7 after an S5. I believe that Alon has "crossed the chasm" with the latest technologies that he/team has developed.

If you get a chance do hear a pair of A5s in the future, as you say, just for the fun of it!!!

I agree with this. They send the billet cone to scanspeak to have it mounted in their motor. To me the Aluminum driver is a little on the heavy side. The last frontier for YG is to design their own motor/magnet system for their drivers. Once they do this they will blow the doors off the speaker industry.

I always believe in collaboration .
Why would i (or somebody else for that matter )before hand know better then scanspeak how to design a ls unit .
Scanspeak does this for a living for god knows how long ...20 -30 years .
Its the end result what counts in listening tests , not fancy design per se .
I use papercomposite for the mids because it sounds natural.
I ve walked the perfect piston diamond / ceramic road long time ago , been there done that and yes they were much more expensive and fancy .
Who cares in the end

Just guessing but looks like they needed to replace their esteemed founder and looked around for the most qualified partner/designer.

For the much heavier cones, one would need a much stronger motor. The best single driver speakers use both light weight paper AND huge motors (2+ Tesla).

I dont think those aluminium YG cones are particulary heavy .
They are very nicely machined whether they sound good i dont know , never heard an YG speaker.
I never heard a rockport as well.

If YG thought they could do better they would have already.

Can any YG fans speculate on their latest news?

Powered speakers? A product that isn't even a speaker?
Looks like they are trying to expand their product line to compete with Wilson and Magico, both of which have speakers starting about $10K and many more models filling more price points. The challenge is to preserve the essential sound upon which their reputation is based in a less expensive speaker. No one else makes speakers that sound like YGs for less -- can YG?

But you have pretty stiff competition there .
You have the wilson audio sabrina at 16 - 17 K for example
Thats a nicely made /constructed speaker for the price.

That is one of the things that I like about audio -- lots of competition. YG has a different sound that many prefer, including me. The Wilson Sabrina is a terrific little speaker but IMO the YG Carmel2 is more interesting. The real gap is with something like the Magico A5 -- a sealed 3 way for less than $25K -- YG currently has no competing speaker.

I know this is not true and I'm pretty sure you do as well. As an engineer I am aware of all kinds of things that could be improved but I simply don't have the time and resources to do it yet. I'm sure Yoav had a laundry list of things to improve. It was just a matter of how he prioritized them. In that list he would have also had things that were not only speaker design but rather manufacturing related improvements.
