ying and yang--Lamm ML3 and darTZeel 458

Imo the best path is as rockitnan suggests and that is with a Lamm preamp

Sorry Doc, I think this is a silly recommendation based on the Lamm posse and nothing else.

There are plenty of people who match SET amps with other preamps - and SS should work arguably the easiest as there is no impedance issue.

Noise has nothing to do with his preamp, guaranteed.

ps. having dual volume controls with no remote is a *big* issue for many of us too. I frankly don't believe Vladimir at all on this either.

Lol

Posse...those with experience, the best kind, even Lammies :)!

so you are denying amp/preamp synergy exists within the same manufacturer ? Mike bought the top of the line Lamm tube power amps...easily in the top 3 in the world. Are you suggesting you can get better performance out of the ML3's with a different preamp vendor ?

Keith

You talk as if you are the voice of experience. As ALF said those who are voicing opinions are all Lamm owners. As far as no remote I understand how that can be a deal breaker. Vlad will never bake a remote with his electronics. For me it is a non issue based on the sonic bliss realized and also the fact that the preamp is a few feet from where I sit. Most users find a gain level on their preamp that is appropriate for almost all music. So until you’re a user Keith you can speculate all you want. The best performance for the ML3 comes from the Lamm LL1 preamp. It’s indisputable. Or is that too dogmatic

I know someone who said the Dart pre sounded better than the Shindo pre with his his Shindo power.

This has to be taken on a case by case basis.

If there is a better pre for the ML3 I believe Vlad would have made it. This is his Signature series. At most he has released the LL 1.1

I don’t deny other preamps will sound fine but I do believe his preamp with the ML3 sounds best.

Here's another thought....( since I am a big believer in a tube preamp over a ss preamp)--- dump the Dart preamp and acquire the Lamm preamp. This way the ML3's will be happy...and so will the Dart amps:cool:

no. the ML3's are guests in my system. they have a limited performance envelope. that's not what my system agenda is.

My advice for what its worth , get the Lamm pre amp to get the whole Lamm thing over with :D / or not , keep both the dart combo and the lamm combo , if possible half a year at least and then sell what you dont like plus give at least the lamm pre a go at the 458 s

K.

Mike, the odds that the preamp is causing your hum issue is unlikely ( although certainly very possible!). How old are your power tubes and your driver tubes?? All connections are checked and have been cleaned? Amp is plugged directly into the wall? May want to make sure preamp is grounded....and on and on. These problems are a curse, I know as my JR 8T has always hummed slightly. ( Jeff tells me this has to do with the choke power supply; which he later changed out for the more picky Asian market. I just live with the minor hum and enjoy what the choke brings to the table.) Nonetheless, if the hum is loud enough at the listening position....that's not ok.:(

When you get them going Mike, you’ll be happy; besides, with the Lamm LL1, or LL1.1 preamplifiers in the mix, there is no, as you describe, “Limited performance envelope.”

Anything else, you will be subject to falling under a confirmation bias...that’s okay, your guest, along with the rest of us, will understand.

Cheers!
