Keith, that is funny, but I mean in the bashing sense. Lots of expensive turntables, certain wires and power cords, some footers, and some speakers have very few negative comments every written about them on this forum. But, if we presume your statement to be true, do you think all brands get the same amount of negative comments that Magico, and perhaps Wilson, get? I would disagree with that quite strongly.

Peter,

We can always find people that bash all expensive or famous brands in audio forums. Curiously fans of other brands defend the brand with enthusiasm and debate criticism, Magico fans seem to love victimization ...

That's surprising, Alon Wolf as digital designer? Do you have a source for that?

"The utterly unique CD12, with designer Alon Wolf (later of Magico) and others, was introduced in 1998 as a digital counterpart to Linn’s long-lived LP player. It was the first, and as far as I know, only dedicated CD player with a development budget over $1M. The sound, then as now, almost eluded description. Not really digital sounding, not exactly analog sounding, the CD12 has an uncanny ability to get closer to the music than any other digital source that I’ve experienced."

Excerpt sent to me from a friend whom knew I had the Player--garnered a Review from a UK Mag --I think mid 2000's but not sure--

I can’t comment about all Magico speakers but the M6 and the M2 are superb speakers. I have both of them in my listening room right now (and a few other excellent speakers as well) and they are both wonderful. There are no perfect speakers in my experience but a minor few of them have far fewer flaws than most. I definitely put the M2 and the M6 in this category. I personally don’t think either of these products deserve such derision.

I don't think anyone is deriding the speakers, just the publications that would appear to lack any semblance of real critique. Of course this is not limited to Magico as they do this to all reviews making a mockery of the review process imho. I think the M6s are great sounding speakers by the way, congrats.

Didn’t realize I came across as a victim. Never thought of myself as one. Strange comment.

As JA stated in his review of the new M2, the speaker will appeal to the well heeled guy who wants a well made product. One that has some bragging rights. Now whether or not the particular Magico can easily be bested by another design/brand at a fraction of the price is irrelevant to this consumer. Sound quality isn't necessarily what is first on their shopping list. Exclusivity and bragging rights are ...and therefore the higher the price, the better the speaker!~ Something that Alon Wolf has understood from the beginning. Something that maybe the folks at Magnepan should take heed of.

I agree with you Peter. Victimize..?
I actually appreciate people who own and enjoy Magico like you Peter. You never got personal nor so defensive when the speakers you own got criticized so negatively. Only people who hang on so tight on their ego would feel or think being victimized imo.

That doesn't even begin to cover the debates about analog vs digital and the like.

It has become remarkably quiet around that topic the last few years. Seems digital has arrived.

I haven't seen anyone bash Wilson here, except Caesar. But the people who have been bashing Magico here have been many.

Although the comment was written in a answer to your post, it was not addressing you specifically, my apologies if you felt so.

I wonder how much better the M6 is than the M3 since it costs $100K more. I was at Magico a while ago and compared the S5 Mk II to the S7. While the S7 was a bit better, it didn’t strike me as $25K more than the S5 better.

Reading that review makes then M6 almost seem coloured in the way it produces music - quite different to how Magico started making speakers.

This is a great point Al. I have never liked a Magico speaker at a show and have consistently found them cold and sterile. PeterA's Magico system is the opposite, very engaging and fun to listen to. It's my belief that Magico needs amplification on the warm side of neutral to make them perform (to my tastes).
I agree.

Magico was heavily criticised before they started producing so many different models. People don't seem to be bashing the lower A series as much. I don't quite get the neverending part. Is VPI criticized for this? I don't think so. No, I think it is something else.
If you need some VPI criticism, I can help in that area.

Unfortunately, shortcomings are noticed by the subconscious of the owner.

Or the conscious. I know the shortcomings of my speakers/system all too well and have no illusions about them. At the same time it's the compromise I can live the most with. The system hits all the most important buttons for me, and it does so astoundingly well, but that is obviously a personal thing. Just like it's a personal thing for everyone else with their own systems and their own priorities.

Chasing for the perfect system, or pretending in one's mind that it exists, is a fool's errand. You will be constantly disappointed, until the day you die. So why even bother with the idea and waste your life.
