Btw Ron,

Any news of the Pendragons ?

/ Jk

Yes; they are scheduled to be moved from the garage to the living room and remain in their crates (stage one of the installation effort) late this coming week or the following week.

Whaaoo, that sounds awesome. I’m excited for your sake… Great times for you in the coming weeks then… Wish I could give you a helping hand ;) . Hope to see some great pics of the steps to installation.

As long as we do not press the red "RECORD" button most things are safe! When I play master tapes I always block the record button with a custom cap. Tapes do not have erase lock mechanism.
Some deck do have a safety button. My Sony APR 5000 Series decks have safety switches so you cannot record by mistake.

Thank you for this depressing list. :) Doesn’t this list basically say that all tapes that or at least 20 years old are suspect?
If the tape is acetate you should not have to and should not bake it. If it is polyester you may have to depending on the tape formulation. I did all my early recordings on Apex 456 and they all have serious SSS and need baking before playing. Ampex 456 sounded wonderful but is notorious for its SSS. Modern tape like SM900 does not exhibit any SSS at all at least after 10 years so far. Modern tape seems good, so far.

Sweet!

Wow, broke down and made a vid! It sounds excellent through my headphones, got some dynamic push there, good work.

Thank you very much, Jonathan!

Sensational sound, Ron!

Sure. Forgot to say: you can tell if the tape is acetate (don't bake it) if you can look at it on a reel and see through it kind of unlike normal polyester tape.
Hello how are you Man ?
Your live recorded tapes are amazing in sound and packaging
Go to tapes to show a new person just how great high can be

Not exactly. But IMO it says that tape collection should be reserved to connoisseurs and otherwise we should digitize our tape collection as soon as possible with the best digital quality available if we want to sleep in peace. :) It is what is meant mostly by audio tape restoration as referred by Richard Hess.

I am looking for the throw-up emoji . . .

On a side note, some people in another forum were complaining that the digital version of “Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys” sounded really bad so I made a DSD and 24/192 version of my reel and people were blown away. It is all about the mastering!

Back to Ron’s room for which there are now songs to fill the air.

What I take out of all this free tape stuff advice is, if you bake make a copy first play as you may not get another chance.
When does the AS2000 arrive in this sequence of events?

These swing-arm lights, six of them, equally-spaced across the wall, are working out well.
