Yes; they are scheduled to be moved from the garage to the living room and remain in their crates (stage one of the installation effort) late this coming week or the following week.

Some deck do have a safety button. My Sony APR 5000 Series decks have safety switches so you cannot record by mistake. As long as we do not press the red "RECORD" button most things are safe! When I play master tapes I always block the record button with a custom cap. Tapes do not have erase lock mechanism.
If the tape is acetate you should not have to and should not bake it. If it is polyester you may have to depending on the tape formulation. I did all my early recordings on Apex 456 and they all have serious SSS and need baking before playing. Ampex 456 sounded wonderful but is notorious for its SSS. Modern tape like SM900 does not exhibit any SSS at all at least after 10 years so far. Modern tape seems good, so far.Thank you for this depressing list. Doesn’t this list basically say that all tapes that or at least 20 years old are suspect?

Hello how are you Man ?Sure. Forgot to say: you can tell if the tape is acetate (don't bake it) if you can look at it on a reel and see through it kind of unlike normal polyester tape.
