Visit to Chris to See Magico M9 and VYGER and Pilium in Southlake, Texas

Bob, it is a know fact that most phone and camera microphones drop off in frequency response below 50Hz. Studio microphones can capture sound lower than this obviously. What system videos aim to capture is the general sound of the system and while they will not capture the lowest notes they get rest and that’s enough to give most of us a taste of the sound in the room. If your customers are into Hip-Hop as you have alluded to in the past then I agree that the sound over videos will probably will not do the speakers justice but most of us are not listening to beat-boxes at home. Post your videos and let us decide what we think. After all, only an idiot would buy or not buy a speaker based on the sound on videos according to most here.
Hi Carlos, less than 1% of my customers are into hip-hop. Maybe 1 demo every six months playing hip-hop, but it does happen occasionally.

I understand your reasoning and respect it and understand what works for you and several others. I defer as I said to what I believe will work for myself and my customers, which their listening habits include Jazz, Classical, Opera, Rock etc.

I prefer in-room listening to the videos, especially when in my experience they are two totally different experiences. Especially when many use the videos to determine the sound of a system. That just doesn't work for me, plain and simple.

I had nothing to do with Ron's visit to Chris in Dallas, so this is second hand, but I do not believe that Chris knew that Ron would be posting the M9s video. Pics were totally fine. I also believe, from talking with Chris after the video had been posted, that he asked Ron to remove the video.

I have heard the M9 system in Dallas several times and think posting this video did a disservice to the M9s. Just mho.
I am of the school of thought that judging a systems sound through a YouTube video is just ridiculous. Most are shot through crappy cell phones and then monitored through a crappy hand held devices, or laptops. Just my opinion and if you want to know the real sound in person auditions are the only way to go, make or take the time if you are serious.

Bob, given your philosophy, why do you think that videos such as the ones of my systems sound so good? The systems obviously sound even better in the room but why do you think that there are system videos out there that sound excellent? What exactly causes only certain good systems to sound awful on videos while others don’t? I think most of us shoot our videos from the listening position/chair. Why are your Magico videos subject to greater degradation than my videos? While you think about that some more I’m going to post another one of my system videos on my system video sharing thread.

I really don't know Carlos, other than when I record and play back the videos back and hear them through my Macbook or phone, compared to what I hear in my room playing the same tracks is the difference between driving at 200mph in a NASCAR simulator/video game and driving on an actual track in a 750hp monster, which I have done both. Totally different experiences.

Not in any way am I saying that yourself and others that can tell the performance of a system should not use videos to do so. I applaud you for being able to do it. I'm just following the path that works for me. Nothing more than that.

If that is true, perhaps Ron could consider removing the video.

I just threw it out there after talking to Chris so let Ron handle it the way he prefers to.

Lets face it, a dealer (in whatever capacity they identify at the moment) visiting another dealer and then posting a [crappy] video is unprecedented. Ron walking the knifes edge here between dealer and hobbiest he’s on the wrong side. And Ron, being the cerebral guy he is, should get this.

I don’t think it was done with malicious intent, but ought not to have been done.

Thank you for a commonsense decision, Bob.

I was just listening this morning, before going to work, full blast to a few movements of the Turangalila symphony by Messiaen, which I will see live at the Boston Symphony in 10 days. To even think that a video can do justice to the power of the orchestra, the dynamics, the hall ambience and the stage depth, as well as the separation of instruments and simultaneous music strands that I hear from my system is preposterous.

yes, that would be preposterous. It would also be preposterous to think any system video sounds just like what you hear at the Boston symphony.

I use videos to convey a general sense of the system and for diagnostics. One can get a sense of the balance, general level of resolution, if anything sticks out. Is it dynamic or bland? It’s easy to hear differences between things like power cords and speaker position when doing video comparisons. They are a tool for learning, diagnostics, and can be fun for sharing.

And then of course there are the really good system videos. They actually do sound very good. DDK’s videos of Tang’snew speakers in Utah sound excellent. And the base extension and weight and articulation are all there. Why is that?

I understand and respect why Magico and Rhapsody don’t want to post videos. Especially videos like Ron‘s. But I actually got a lot of positive comments on my Magico Q3 videos in my old system. Some people seemed to really like the sound of those and people could track the evolution of the sound of that system through those posted videos. Some of Bonzo‘s videos are excellent. The sense of balance and dynamics comes through very clearly. And how open and free some of them sound. The flow.

Perhaps we should just except that some people don’t want to post them and others do depending on how they feel about them. We should either enjoy them or ignore them. This constant back-and-forth is very tiresome.

I think it would be great to hear how Bob’s M7s sound with the different amplifiers. But I understand that he’s coming from 100% representation point of you and that just does not exist. So as a dealer, he should encourage people to listen to them in person. Of course that is better. I also agree with everyone that the Dallas M9 video did not sound good. I am surprised it hasn’t been taken down.

everyone has different interests. Rhapsody and Magico want what is best for business and their clients. Ron has several interests, one of which is to create content for his website and YouTube channel. He certainly did that by posting this video and all of the posts that followed its release. Nothing wrong with any of that. I guess it comes down to judgment when there are conflicts. I think this audience is pretty good at making judgments.

Wow you thought videos were a way to save on a ticket to the BSO?? In the same post as commonsense?

I use the videos as a glimpse into gear and systems, setups. Nothing more. As Bob said, it goes without saying, no one in their right mind is basing critical listening or anything else off of a video. It's just a little voyeurism, a look see, a small tool. I think we are all further along in this obsession to have to dissect video usage...Geeze...

This is a great example of what is meant when the young say, “You do you”. My generation used to say, “Live and let live.“

there are audio file groups around the world that share videos of each other’s systems and it is a great way to build their community. There is sharing, discussion, and learning. I am involved in such a group. It’s really easy to track system progress. My group standardizes stuff for ease and consistency. Simple iPhones at the listening seat with the same LPs. We have learned a lot from each other. Despite the obvious advantages of listening to the actual system, it is sometimes difficult to travel and hear other systems and spend time with like-minded individuals face-to-face.

Oh I misread - you thought your system will prepare you for BSO - lol!!!

Getting familiar with the music on my system will prepare me, yes -- obviously. It's about the music, isn't it?

I expect that the live experience with the BSO to be on a whole different level, which holds in comparison with any system.

We can add "what ever floats your boat" Agreed it's a nice tool to see/hear and have a better picture of ones system...

The fastest way to share with others, beyond modeling photos, is videos,
But to conclude that this is how the SETUP sounds in REALITY is one of the most ridiculous, childish things I've come across.
Without of course hurting the feelings of those who do adopt this idea.
Anyway...

After watching this video, I was curious about Scaeana 3.2

Video could not convey whole scale and deep bass but if you have keen ear, you can catch the overall performance.

When I happened to see the listing for used Scaena 3.2, I jumped at it on Dec 2019

Funny thing is that I could not assemble it for 2 and half years since I could not ask other people to help me on assembly during Corona Pendemic.

After doing the job with help of one WBF member, I could get the sound I want only after adding Rel 31 subwoofers.

Without Rel, the deep bass was missing.

The advntage of line array speaker is realistic soundstage with deep and wide soundstage.

The conclusion is that video could be of help to the people with keen ear, but could mislead some naive people without much experience.
