Best wishes on your healing. I crushed my lateral knee compartment some how the year before last (I don't have the foggiest how I did it), had peroneal nerve numbness to my foot and pain for almost a year. Really could not walk for more than a half mile for about eight months because pain made it unpredictable. Fortunately, I could still cycle and do other things.
It has finally cleared up mostly, with slight residual numbness like carpal tunnel of the knee, but no restrictions. Unfortunately, over 50, the healing process tends to be prolonged with these things.
I was under the impression that the adhesion breaking was more a thing of the past when surgeons immobilized the knee in a cast for two months PO. Nowadays, the patient is immediately put in a passive motion machine and begins PT right away (not to mention goes through a pre-OP PT regiment also). Then as soon as the quad is activated and able to support weight, the brace comes off and squatting and other motions are initiated. Much better outcomes with today's procedures.
wishing you well and a speedy recovery Bruce...I also crushed my right knee -just by standing up to play ball with my dog- this happened 5 months ago and I still can't walk more then a mile-geeeez- I went to get my knee- x rayed and the Doc found nothing but a bad sprain--the funny thing is my dog hurt her leg also at around the same time-she's walking around like a tripod and I am hobbling around with her-it's the funniest and saddest thing to see.--and yes being over fifty takes a long long time to heal--I'm feeling it-what do you say, about another 6 months of this pain???-- by the way my dog is fully recovered...but no more ball playing...

For the most part true.... However, at full flexion and extension, there is still some residual effect. It's the last 10 degrees in either direction that can present the challenge. Full extension is required for smooth gait. Full flexion is nice for many motions, including putting on one's socks, etc. I'm sure Bruce will report on progress.

a simple knee xray won't diagnose a sprain and if you've had pain for 6 months IMO you need an MRI of your knee for accurate diagnosis. You might have a small tear of either your medial or lateral meniscus

Thanks Steve -will do.. for it's just been to long on the pain side of things--but go figure, I went to an specialist and he stated it was a bad sprain- and the Doc showed me the x-ray- then moved my leg all around, squeezed my knee and there was no pain it's just that I can't put that much pressure on it-- like standing up or even bending my leg-- but it is getting better- but I do feel 70 % from where I was without the sprain.. but thanks Doc I will still get an MRI..
I broke my right ankle a long time ago and I knew it was broken because I felt the bone snap and I heard it snap. The first doctor I went to told me that I had a mild sprain even though it was 3x the size of my left ankle and was black, blue, purple, green, and yellow when he saw it. This was a total horror story. It took 3 doctors and 13 days before I finally was put in a cast. The moral to the story is that doctors don't always get it right.
Well 1week post-op and I can walk very slowly without crutches. I take the brace off for 1-2hr a day and bend the knee. I have greater than 90degree ROM. I can straighten it completely.
I start 6mo. of PT next week. They gave me a chart of goals I must meet every 2 weeks. There are some tests that I'm unfamiliar with. So far so good!
