An entry level sytem

The used market is a wonderful place for putting together an entry-level system.

I tend to think the used market requires a little experience. OTOH many got their first stereo purchased from another audiophile who was upgrading

I agree. It does require some knowledge. And for someone entirely new that could be an issue. Point noted! :)

These suggestions seemed aimed at 50+ year-olds buying an entry system.

An entry system for an under 30 person might be an iPod/Iphone with earbuds. Upgrades might be

better phones
headphone amp
dock and powered speakers

Guitly I am 50+. I did post a link above that http://www.stereophile.com/content/thinksound-ts02-ear-headphones includes ear buds and powered speakers. Also a suggestion for portable headphone system. http://www.whatsbestforum.com/showthread.php?7711-Beyerdynamic-vs-Sennheiser-vs-Stax Post #3.

The thread is ongoing and any suggestions you have are welcome.

-- Greg (or any other member for that matter), what would be a nice entry level system for cute chicks between the age of 18 to 28? :b

BOSE? ...Some' else?

I have not looked into demographics but empirical investigation suggests women have a love affair with Apple. Women are far more into the music than the equipment. Women like to dance more than sit and listen..Women are social and view listening as a secondary activity.

Ipod or Iphone dock with Bose system.

I've used Audioengine A5s as nearfield speakers in a home office for about 5 years. I think they would be a good component of a modern entry system for near field use or in a fairly small room.

Very Henry Kloss speaker virtues. You know they aren't perfect but you just enjoy the music and don't think about the speakers.

---- BINGO! ...Right to the point true answer. :b

Newegg.com is selling a pair of SP-BS41-LR Loudspeakers for $ 85. That's very different from ugly speakers costing over $ 50,000 / pair.

Bill

---- Those are the ugly Pioneer speakers?

And what $50,000/pair speakers have to do with 'an entry level system'? ;)

The ones you commented on or a very similar smaller model.

If you had $ 85 to spend on speakers, would you be willing to settle for less attractive looking speakers that sounded better or would you insist on attractive speakers that sounded significantly worse?

If you were spending $ 50,000+, would you expect great sound and good looks?

i think if we can pause for a moment. it appears we can get a dac included in many integrated amps like Peachtree. Obviously that cuts down on cables, cost and shelf space.
While I don't recommend MP3,if they already have it,they certainly can incorporate it.

We certainly don't want to overlook look the Maggie desktop system. Or their MMG satellite system. You also can get a Mac powerbook for $1199. Quite affordable because it act as your main computer.

Couldn't afford the KRK Rokit 6's for now, so I picked up some Behringer 1030A's. These along with my Asus Xonar Essence STX card give me a nice inexpensive PC setup. I just added some Auralex MoPads Isolation pads and used the additional wedgies so the tweeters are now almost pointing at ear level.
