I thought I'd give my impressions stepping up from the Pre G2 to the Stern as I haven't read any direct comparisons other than to say some folks said that the Heisenbergs are the bigger sonic benefit in the Scientist series. That may well be true (I don't have them yet, budget limits at the moment) but comparing the two preamps directly what I hear with the Stern is:
- An increase in detail without fatigue
- A greater sense of weight resulting in further realism of instruments (note: not warmth)
- Greater dynamics
- A blacker background
- Added low frequency weight, yet not exaggerated
- An increase in scale, both the ability for instruments to appear at further extremes horizontally and vertically.
- A greater density of and further clarity with spacial cues
Definitely a serious upgrade and worth the $ IMO. Bill from GTT said it would be a huge difference, and he was right.
My only gripe - Audionet: please provide a better remote! It's the same boxy, kinda cheesy / clicky buttons type remote as the Pre G2. Minor, but worth a mini - gripe.
Can't wait to get my hands on either an additional pair of Max's, the new Schodingers or the Heisenbergs sometime in the future.
