lloyd,
I sort of agree with you there, regarding the darTZeel. It's anything but a muscle amp. And if muscle is what you want (and like), you won't find it there.
Matter of fact, when I temporarily put a Krell 402e in the place of my 108, I was enjoying it quite a bit, mostly for all that muscularity, and the way the Krell handled the bass on my Dynaudios. I can understand people preferring that to the 108. But to me, as I said before, once I put the 108 back, I knew what I was getting in return for the Krell's power, and it was finesse, delicacy, sheer audio confort.
I understand the Gryphon brings some of that finesse, along with the muscle, and that's why they impressed me at the latest hi end show.
Two things regarding your darTZeel experience: what cables were you using (power, IC, speaker)? And WA is not a common pairing for the 108, IIRC. It might prove too much for its meagre 100W... If you can, hook it up to a more efficient/easier to drive speaker, like the Magico Q3/Q7.

I also managed to spend a couple of days with the Colosseum here - and the same speaker:

I thought then that the Colosseum was also one of the best amplifiers in the world. More nimble than the 911, slightly stronger, but not as warm.
FM Acoustics, another "best amplifier in the world" was fast and detailed and resolute - again with the same speaker.
Unfortunately, there is no perfect amplifier. At least with amps we get to be "serially monogamous". Can't do that with wives or girlfriends
Happy Holidays, folks!
(...) Having spent two weeks with it in my system, I think that the Bravo is light and playful whereas the 911 is warm and cuddly.
Alexandre,
Is the Q3/Q7 easier to drive than Q5 ? I'm asking since I only heard the darTZeel 108 with the Q5.

Gary,
Thanks, you are restoring my faith in the 911mk3 ...
lloyd,
Then I don't get you If it's nuance, detail and midrange "magic" you want, darTZeel has that in spades, more so than any other amp I've heard, including tubes!
TA Ref cabling is quite good, and very compatible with the 108. The power cord is one of the best I've used with it, actually.
With all that said, I do realise that the darTZeel is not for everyone (or every speaker). People hear differently, and what might sound "right" for one, might be lacking for others.

MUCH easier to drive. I had a Q3 in my room until a couple of weeks ago, and I never got the 108's "eyes" to blink, not even once. The Q7 is an even easier load. alexandre

-- Why the number 911?
I'm asking as I heard the Q5 with the 108 at my dealers shop, and got the impression (confirmed by the dealer) that the darTZeel didn't have the current to drive them properly. I also had this very problem with my Sashas - at least to some extent - which made me sell the amp eventually. Maxx 3 on the other hand are no problem for darTZeel (I have two friends running this very setup), so I guess Q3 and Q7 may be similar.
---- And the relation?
the local distributor here for Wilson, Magico, DTZL was just here doing some work, and i specifically inquired about the Q7 having heard the Q3 and Q5...his opinion was they are all highy demanding of serious high-current power to be driven optimally. The local dealer owner asked why given the efficiency, but the Distributor went thru the impedance loads at certain frequencies and said that this was a characteristic that would demand serious heavy weight amplification.
While I'll agree that something more powerful would be better, like 2 108s, my 108 did quite well with the Q7 when I took it to the dealer's. I think I saw the eyes blink only once or twice throughout the (long) session. As a matter of fact, the 108 was considerably better than the Soulution 7xx monoblocks that the dealer had there, that cost about the same as the 458 monos.
The Q7 is much easier to drive than the Q5, AND can be bi-amped. The Q5 OTOH can't. The Q3 can't either, but, as I said earlier, it works wonderfully with a single 108.
Elberoth, I haven't heard the darTZeels with the Sasha, but a local guy here is shopping for speakers, after he realised how bad the Sashas are with the 108 (or vice-versa). He's probably getting an S5 or a Q3.

Elberoth,
The DartZeel NH108B also has no problems driving the Alexandria X2 to very loud sound levels - and the version with the SCNP chip can deliver more current than the older versions.
Which amplifier are you currently using?
