Burmester 911 mk3

Elberoth,

The DartZeel NH108B also has no problems driving the Alexandria X2 to very loud sound levels - and the version with the SCNP chip can deliver more current than the older versions.
Which amplifier are you currently using?

Yes, I know. Sasha is the only exception in Wilson family. My previous Sophia II spekers were also perfectly happy with the Dart. I have even one friend running 108 with the Maxx 2 (2.25 Ohm minimum) and that is also (borderline) OK. I got my amp upgraded with the SCNP chip - my amp was one of the very first amps upgraded - but it didn't really help. You just have to realise that Sasha and Magico Q5 are one of the very speakers 108 cannot drive.

Hey Microstrip...compared to the Q7, how does Alexandria compare as a load?

As I have never found measurements on the X2 series 2 impedance I have just taken them - it seems to be an easy load, minimum impedance is around 3.5 ohms and a low phase angle, always between -20 and 35 degrees. Much easier to drive than the Sasha, even ignoring the big difference in sensitivity between both speakers.

Next time I listen to the Q7 I will try to take some measurements of its impedance. I attach the Alexandria X2 series 2 graphs - the spikes in the graphs are just noise.

1991 = 91 in short, January = 1, add this together and you have 91 + 1 = 911.

All burmester products are coded like this.

---- You first typed January 1990. :b ...Thanx, I got it now.

* And I learned some' else: that "all Burmester products are coded like this." ...I did not know.

I don't know why all the talk about Magico/Wilson and DZ. I will put my money on Venture Audio any day of the week. I heard the Magicos at Music Lovers In Berkeley, Ca., and was not impressed for the coin, IMHO.

Edit: this was listening to the non Q speakers.

Thanks, for the X2 S2 graphs, Microstrip! Look forward to comparing to Q7...i am told to expect a much tougher load.

Maybe this particular thread may not be the perfect platform, and i apologise in advance for diverting its title a bit, but i must chime in on the gryphon amps/pre discussion-
i had the gryphon solo colleseums and the mirage preamp 2 years ago or so, and enjoyed their sound immensly..... BUT, they were not relaible. one of the amps continued to blow fuses and after the run -around with having them repaired by gryphon for 3 months, i sold them and never looked back.
and i heard similar stories of unrelaibilty issues with other gryphon gear from other ex- gryphon owners.
soundwise, they are great, reliabilty wise, at least based on my own expereince and others'-i wouldn't touch them.

Hi Ozy...always good to learn from other people's experiences! I admit my first Antileon was 14 years old, and i had the failed capacitor that just would not quit! Eventually, they found it and it was perfect, and then i traded it in. I bought a second hand Colosseum stereo and so far so good...just over a year. Fingers crossed!

Soundwise, i agree...and hopefully will be faultless in performance. What are you using now? i think you sold your VAC Ref monos?

Thanks for sharing. One thing about Burmester=bullet proof!!

yes, the gryphon's sound is very good ,but i found their products to be sub par.i'm not the only one.
the vac monos are sold ,and i'm using 911s+077 loaners for another week or so. great sounding gear......more on that to come...

I did the Burmester thing for over 2 years. Absolute heaven, but not the most transparent. A little "Burmester mist" if you will.

Tell that to my friend. ALL 3 pieces of Burmester gear required service and one is still not right. He was not a happy camper and getting service was not the easiest chore.

interesting to know.

I have 2 BMWs. One has never seen a garage except regular service, one lives there. Go figure.

I think it's the case of just a few bad apples. It happens to ALL manufacturers and I agree with Jim's view.
Life is more exciting when one takes some risks (calculated ones). The Mephisto's sound is so good that I'm willing to take that risk. Hopefully, my unit is not one of those few bad ones.

Joe, your friends were really unlucky. It's first time I red such thinks about Burmester components. An Italian Audio Reviewer said to me that He kept "on" at all the times for 23 years his Burmester preamp (i don't remember the model) and then one capacitor exploded!!:D

Hi,

About Gryphon I listened many times the Antileon Signature and Colosseum to my delear showroom. Great amps at all. Just a little too analytical sound for my taste. About the latest Mephisto, my delear said to me that its sound is different from Colosseum and He considers the said amp one of the best ever listened by him. I inquiried to him about the difference in sound of Mephisto/Burmester 911's monos: He replay to me: Two special refined wines both at top of the Mountain.

I hope to listen Mephisto soon.
