Barry, I can't believe what I'm reading. Maybe it's time to release the figures for regular flu deaths. Would put this mass panic into perspective.

Good for you. It will be out of stock soon like other places with infections in the asia.

“Surgical masks will not prevent your acquiring diseases,” said Dr. William Schaffner, a professor of preventive medicine and infectious diseases at Vanderbilt University, and the medical director of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases.

Rather, he explained, surgical masks are typically used by surgeons to protect their patients from their mouth-borne germs — but “those masks don't work to prevent inhaling diseases,” said Schaffner.

With virus that travel on moisture, good filter on these masks keeps the moisture out

Marc I don't think you understand how parents think.
Their first priority is to protect their own children, not to avoid a recession.
If their child or children attend a school at which other children have returned recently from an affected area they will expect the school to take appropriate measures to obviate, or at the very least to minimise, any risk to the health of their own children. Some parents will also have elderly relatives living with them, or with whom they are inregular contact, so they will also wish to safeguard them from any risk of infection

So, for how long? For every kid in every school to be tested? With kids always travelling, that's almost impossible to guarantee.

Marc. Did you read the link that Bonzo posted. The death rate is about 2%. Mers is something like 60%. With something like Mers your health got bad so quickly you have to be hospitalized so soon. But this Covid19 you might not feel shit for two weeks without knowing you have it. And you walk around spreading this virus without you or other people knowing. Yes You might not even die from it if you are a very healthy individual and get treated properly. But think about how easy it camouflage itself and spread out. 1 million is 20,000 deaths. A thai 30 yrs old taxi driver picked up a stranger from airport. Met that person once and now he has the virus. I just came back from Japan. I want to go listen to your Zu, can you come pick me up at Heathrow?

I assume your government is smart. They must have investigated and found many people from conspicuous places traveled into England these past weeks. That is why they are implementing these protective measures.

I think it is natural to fear the unknown. Authorities are correct to take extreme precautions. Current media access give us real time reports on every epidemic. Children face risk every time the leave home. No one withdrew thier kids because of a school shooting.
Mass hysteria is counter productive. OTOH nor should we stick our heads in the sand. There should be,however, a plan for reasonable precautions.
2700 people out of billions is minimal.

AFAIK only two scholls in the UK with pupils recently returned from Northern Italy have closed or partially closed. That seems to me entirely sensible for the reasons I set out. I am not aware of any serious suggestion that ALL schools should be closed which appears to be what you are fantasising about.
Fake news?

You are 100% correct. The masks are more for the infected ones than non-infected people.
And those masks don't close tight all around the face. Doctors use better masks, airtight.

I guess it has a psychologic protection but that is it, useless in practice.

Do you guys have any data to support your belief that surgical masks are ineffective?

If you get a particulate mask and are clean shaven it may help but a surgical mask won't prevent inhaling it if it's transmitted airborne.

Last time I got sick was about 10 years ago with the H1N1 flu, people were hospitalized and some died, it's not a lot of fun to get a severe flu!

And this one seems odd in that it's killing people who are otherwise healthy so who knows who is most vulnerable...

We just finished a decade and started a new one...December 31, 2019/January 1st, 2020
Not even two months into it and the world is a different place.
Who knew two months ago ...

* The Dow Jones (US stock market) lost 6.5% the last two days.
Other world markets aren't exempt, if some are it's just a question of when, not if.

Italy has a big impact.
Iran is scary, very.

In North America, like me in British Columbia, Canada, we are ok right now...no death.

A Pandemic is just round the corner, a highly likely possibility about to be officially announced soon by WHO. I'm not posting any link or videos because I'm sure most of you already know.
And you can Google what that means...a Pandemic.

"During an update on the spread of the novel coronavirus in the U.S. on Tuesday, Dr. Anne Schuchat, principal deputy director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said during a media availability on Tuesday that it’s likely the new coronavirus will cause a pandemic.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, added that a vaccine for the novel coronavirus, known as COVID-19, would likely begin human trials within a month and a half, but cautioned a vaccine would not be available to the public for at least another year."
