Those predicted numbers (estimates) are nothing new; several other experts have been mentioning them for a while now.
That interview was from yesterday, and like all other experts on this subject you can see how serious he is, and calm too.

Careful about using the word "fancy". I've had the same experience. Anyway, back to the virus.
Ha, have no issues with specialist cables as my signature shows Bluefox, this one really tilted my system balance in a way that my gear doesn’t need at all. One short Ethernet cable shifted the balance well away from where it was (which is exactly where I was happy with it till then).
But it just wasn’t at all a neutral cable... surprisingly so.
Where it really was difficult was it had a midbass emphasis which didn’t feel at all natural plus it really homogenised all the recordings similarly (made them all sound very ECM like) which hasn’t been a system trait/issue till now. It was I had expected to be one relatively benign digital cable with some improvement given that it was just one in a chain of three Ethernet cables between router and switch, switch and server and then server to render. I went off topic because I was sitting there so surprised and uncomfortably gobsmacked at what I hoped would be a small nice upgrade. Uhmmm and yes, very much back to the virus.

Well, just wait until it spreads through the homeless population here on the west coast USA. Once there, it will be difficult to control for sure.
The Spanish Flu is only similar in the sense that is also a virus. It was killing mainly 18-49 year olds whereas the coronavirus is killing mainly over 70 year olds. Yes, it spreads easily but over 80% have mild to almost no symtoms...I think Spanish flu was far deadlier than this will be...
Apples to oranges. Spanish flu was deadlier because of WW1, which caused unsanitary conditions and media censorship, and the lack of medical and hygienic protocols. Hand and washing by doctors only began in 1940. 18-49 year olds were killed because they were in unsanitary conditions in the trenches.
Today, globalization is at its peak. There are average of 100.000 flights per day (200.000 flights/day on peak times). Average age in modern societies are higher than ever. These societies cover big portion of the world economy. Even if this virus spreads like Spanish flu or a normal flu, there will be drastic change in world politics and economics.
Of course it is a different time. Of course this virus is different than the Spanish flu.
This is why all scientists and sensible leaders are taking this risk very very very seriously. All sports events, concerts, exhibitions etc. are being cancelled. People do not cancel these events they invested just because they are stupid or in panic. They do because the danger is near and it is big.

I see that 10% of Iranian members of parliament have Corona, and the porous borders in that part of the world may witness the biggest spread of the disease. Not helped by the authorities in Iran promoting crank cures etc.

In 1918 (World War II) the global population was between 1.7 and 1.8 billion, depending of the source.
Today (2020) we are 7.8 billion, 6 billion more.

The Coronavirus is in a different environment, different demographics, very contagious and easy to transmit from human to human. It knows no boundaries, none.
We are living different times than we were from just last year; that is a fact no matter what the non-sayers are saying.
The health scientists around the globe, experts on viruses of all kinds and contagions and epidemics and pandemics are observing and learning from a new virus, the COVID-19.
Containment is key, because it has the high probability potential to infect 40 to 70% of the entire adult world population.
This is the situation we're in today, and in British Columbia where I reside they just have confirmed new infected people who travelled in the Washington State.
Nobody wants to diminish or amplify the severity of this new global treat in the year 2020, today March 4th, and going forward, nobody. We are carefully monitoring the scientists and our leaders in the way they are protecting humanity's health. And with them we are contributing, part of the system, part of our survival to all. I know, right now the elderly and people with heart and respiratory issues, plus, are much more vulnerable than healthy young people and children who are the beneficiary of this planet's inheritance.
If this was life as usual I wouldn't be washing my hands, watching the stock markets, reading the news, writing what I just wrote.
Shows and public gatherings, sports events, music concerts, mass prayers, etc., etc., etc., are cancelled all over the world. And it's not because of media news or Twitter or propaganda or Mickey mouse Disney, etc., ...it's because of CONTAINMENT...a preventive measure for a very serious issue...life and death.
There are few members here who are not realizing the real situation; in time they will.
Nobody can predict the future, but we can work to make it better ...

Abstract
Deaths during the 1918–19 influenza pandemic have been attributed to a hypervirulent influenza strain. Hence, preparations for the next pandemic focus almost exclusively on vaccine prevention and antiviral treatment for infections with a novel influenza strain. However, we hypothesize that infections with the pandemic strain generally caused self-limited (rarely fatal) illnesses that enabled colonizing strains of bacteria to produce highly lethal pneumonias. This sequential-infection hypothesis is consistent with characteristics of the 1918–19 pandemic, contemporaneous expert opinion, and current knowledge regarding the pathophysiologic effects of influenza viruses and their interactions with respiratory bacteria. This hypothesis suggests opportunities for prevention and treatment during the next pandemic (e.g., with bacterial vaccines and antimicrobial drugs), particularly if a pandemic strain–specific vaccine is unavailable or inaccessible to isolated, crowded, or medically underserved populations.

I am calling BS on this fear op right now. Bookmark this. Gone by Summer and the total overreaction is a sham. Even the China conflation Op is now failing as the total factory shutdown has cleared up the Wuhan air enormously and the pneumonia cases now have a chance to recover with decent air.
With all this doom and gloom, we are not even at a million cases yet,. A month ago we had about 30K cases. Now we have about 90K, so tripling in a month. If that rate holds, 300K in April, 1m in May, 3m in June and Blammo...we have SUMMER and sunlight. Dead in its tracks. Do the math. How the HELL WHO guys was predicting 45m global deaths back on Feb 12? Now we hear that the death rate is wildly overestimated and many infected are asymptomatic. Even the Kirkland, WA deaths are centers around and old age home. ROTFLMAO. As if anything about mortality in an old age home is unusual. Newsflash, its stock in trade at such places.
