Doctor's Orders-Part Two-The New Listening Room Of Steve Williams

Marty

I also have Bernstein's and really like it but I am surprised you have it as it is remastered from 24/96 digital
Actually, both of these recordings are 16/44.1 masters, but still sound pretty darn good! And they are available very cheaply!

(...) However, Tony Duggan thinks that perhaps the greatest Mahler 5th is by a lesser known conductor Rudolf Barshai with the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie on Laurel and Brilliant Classics (93719)(...)

Marty,

Thanks for the remembering the late Tony Duggan Mahler symphonies survey at musicweb-international http://www.musicweb-international.com//Mahler/index.html. His personnel opinions are really of great value for anyone wanting to know about Mahler interpretations. And his well thought concluding words of his Preface to the synopsis work will find a place forever in any opinion forum " I hope you find them helpful and stimulating. If you find them neither, then I hope that disagreeing with them has only deepened your appreciation of Gustav Mahler."

We can also explore the character of Mahler's symphonies with the leading Mahler conductors at Gramophone: http://www.gramophone.co.uk/feature/mahlers-symphony-no-1-by-sir-charles-mackerras and links included at the bottom of the page.

I totally concur about Tony Duggan. His guidance for listening to Mahler is unmatched IMHO. He was such a consummate professional and gentleman who died of a sudden stroke in 2012 at age 58. It's too bad his last mega Mahler review was in 2006. It would be nice if someone of his caliber put the last decade's contributions into his voluminous perspective. Unfortunately, although I am a Gramophone subscriber, there is nobody on their list whom I think cracks the list of preferred conductors put together by Tony. Like all things in musical taste, there is no substitute for personal preference. For example, there are some tremendous Mahlerites I like that never cracked Duggans's list; Jaap Van Zweden (Mahler 1) and Marin Alsop (Mahler 5), both heard live, come to mind. But Duggan's recommendations are definitely the place to start.

Steve,

Another wonderful performance on EMI vinyl is Frank Bridge's The Sea with Sir Charles Groves conducting the Royal Liverpool Symphony Orchestra. I believe it was on HP's Super Disc list. The string tone, combined with a wonderful performance (I have had several various accounts of this), and a great recording deliver the musical and audiophile goods. It's still available on reissue vinyl from 3rd party Amazon sellers, and to find the original EMI ASD "half-dog" version a decided bonus.

Thanks Lee

And thanks Marty as most of these records were all inspired by listening to them at your house. I promised you that when you visit me I will have those records and most are here. I am expecting 2 early next week

In the interim I was hasty to have ordered the wrong version of Carmina Burana which arrived today. After you corrected the version I heard at your house I found a mint copy and it arrives early next week.

The one that arrived from Germany although mint in every way didn't hold a candle to the version I heard at your house

Which Carmina did you get which is 'incorrect', and which is 'correct'? Was just looking at Carmina Burana myself. What a coincidence!

I have this one...

and may try this one...

Agreed, but I think that 'Love over Gold' is even better!

And their debut is better still, but it's a different sonic experience.

another fabulous record I heard at Marty's 2 weeks ago. I even found a new and sealed copy of the record on Discogs. The sonics on this record are simply superb. A Direct to disk recording. Definitely recommended and again thanks to Marty for introducing me to this record.

And finally the one that I was really waiting for was the version of Carmina Burana that Marty played for me from start to finish. This record for my ears was one of the highlights of the trip.As I stated previously I did order and receive what I thought was the version I heard until I was corrected. Well the correct version (NM) arrived also yesterday and it was simply fantastic in my system

which one are you referring to John?

Wasn't their first album titled "Dire Straits"

There are many, many releases, re-releases, re-mastering of this album. It is hard to find one with sound as good as their subsequent albums (Love over Gold is fabulous if you can find quiet vinyl).

It's like searching for a needle in the haystack, but IMHO, the best sounding is this one. Not many bands get the half-speed mastering treatment from Abbey Road - Dire Straits did in this rare UK-only release. Check for the inverted "STRAWBERRY" in the dead-wax.

I like the STRAWBERRY masterings on some of the LZ albums.
