Famous Swiss Tape Recorder Brand To Re-introduce Reel-to-Reel Analog Recorder!

Who can correctly guess the first model's format and price? I'm assuming it is Studer.

-My first guess would be a 2", 8-track (the so-called "super analog" format featured on the JRF website) and $75K.

-And perhaps a 1/2", 2-channel released at the same time. $35k?

My guess is that it will be a 1/2" 2-Channel?

i remember 6-7 years ago when i got into tape and was mostly skoffed at. there was no source of information, no source for software....nothing.

now no one is surprised when they want to build a new deck and it seems reasonable.

i vote 1/2" too, but it will for sure be 2 channel. there is no home market for multi-channel tapes.

They could make a 1/2" & 1/4" 2-Channel for the home market that is coming back!

I think a new Studer-produced deck would be strictly oriented for professional, studio use. Not a consumer, home-market deck. Hence my guess of an 8-track. I would prefer they build a 1/4 inch "prosumer" deck, but I don't see them making a profit off such a product.

1/4" 2 track, Studer is my guess.

Perhaps it will be a Nagra - after all they already have an unit called MPS - the new Nagra MPS Multiple Power Supply .

Well Studer is still in business as well making consoles.

Wouldn't it just be our luck that it would be another "Digital" tape machine like the D820!

And Studer is owned by Harmon, so the start-up money is there. Plus they already have in-hand blueprints of all their transports.

Fremer indicated it would be an analog deck.

I'll hazard a guess...Studer, 2", 16-track :p

I don't think studios are going back to tape. Though the advances in head and tape technology has made noise reduction all but useless. From what I've seen being sold on ebay, ¼ inch stereo decks go for much higher prices then larger format/tracks. Most 8 and higher track pro machines never seem to sell or are giveaways.

Studer,Revox, Stella or Nagra ?

Studer: Unlikely. Now Harman owned with big corporate mentality. Production of their Studer branded desks are done in Britain in the Soundcraft factory. All documentation on the tape recorders and blueprints were given away to a third party, the famous Studer museum destroyed .Not really Swiss anymore.

Revox: Once the consumer arm of Studer, this is now a German (?) owned company selling mainly home theatre type products. Re introducing analogue tape? Unlikely. Too small a company and too far from current interest.

Stellavox: Dead, dead . Name belongs(belonged?) to Goldmund who once was going to use it to take over the world with the StellaDAT. DAT failed , as did Stella (again), Currently makes a DAC and a JOB based amplifier. OOPS , just saw that the StellaDAT is alive and well under the Sonosax umbrella. Maybe a new Stella Analogue Master recorder is not so outrageous after all? A mythical beast indeed!

Nagra: Currently active in the high end. Huge company with small high end audio sideline. Lots of resources and experience. For every one audiophile with a tape there are a 100 aspiring(and not so aspiring) filmmakers pining for the presence of a Nagra 4 on set. Nagra's demo at Munich does have a 4 on the top shelf next to the DAC . My bet is on re introduction of the 4 but its lack of 10 inch reel capability may hamper it in audiophile circles.

I hope it will come up the transport with repro head only then will cost down a bit, although still cost a lot of mechanism parts but with CN cutter can make it easily , think of those price of high end table and arm and cart, they are living in the market now,let people use different preamp to go with the transport comes out in different effect and have fun

Does anyone know how to order those Oscar Peterson tapes? Cost?

+1

No way can do without 10 inch reel capacity though.

I vote for rebirth of Nagra IV-S with QGB adapter for 10.5" reels.

Screw having a tape deck that requires adapters to accept the big reels.
