Golden Gate DAC arrives.

I have 3-4 terabytes of 2xdsd vinyl rips. I listen to them daily.

I don't really know the answer to that question.

a guess might be 150+ 2xdsd vinyl rips + around a hundred 2xdsd titles not (mostly RTR tape) sourced from vinyl maybe. there are weekly additions.

I could be way off in my estimate.

2xdsd hours? 40 minutes x 200 = 133 hours. something like that, I suppose.

I have many more regular dsd files than 2xdsd files.

my NAS currently has 17 terabytes, it's quite a bit more than half full, maybe 70% full (of PCM and dsd).

Basically, one 2xdsd vinyl rip takes quite a bit of data...space.

true. but these days storage data space is relatively only numbers on a page; it's so cheap. the cost of storage of data is no longer a significant issue for music lovers with high end systems. relative to any other aspect of a system it's cheap. the actual CPU speaking to the dac with the ssd and all the tweaks is where all the cost is now. storage is just a big bit bin. and with every bit eating higher format the cost of storage will likely drop faster than the need for file size. it's the world we live in.

I totally agree with you Mike.

pclab.pl have just posted a Golden Gate review. It is in Polish, so probably of little interest to most of you, but it does contain quite a few interesting images:

Adam, any English feedback for us on sonics? Your thoughts so far?

Not trying to derail here but, Don't you ever get just a twinge when you just spent 3 grand on a three foot power cable, several hundred dollars on an outlet, only to see common grade small gauge unshielded wire in abundance all surrounded by all kinds of electrically emitted noise. Especially the ones soldered directly to the IEC socket.

Edit, this statement is not directed at Lampi. This is just an observation about pretty much all equipment out there that I have seen opened up and opened up myself.

That's an excellent point, and its honestly almost an industry standard to cheat on internal grounding, wiring, shielding, etc despite the cost of the box. Looking into most electronics is an "emperor has no clothes" experience....

I don't look at it as cheating at all, but more of an over doing it on the external wiring obsession on our end. What is in those boxes is reality 101. You can have fantastic sound with common goods.

Look at Steve's audio revelation visiting DDK, all with homemade cables and old can't possibly sound good vintage speakers!

Sorry this should be in its own thread.

Phones ringin Dude.

Well all righty then. I have experimented with vintage equipment (Large Advents, Pioneers speakers, etc) and while it can sound good, it often does not sound like real music....just sweet sounding hifi. As for cabling, it can effect jitter and thus has a profound potential impact if your system can reveal such changes. Mine can....

I do not disagree with you at all in any way. I believe in good quality cables all the way, I have sipped the Kool-Aid. It just stings a little when you see what's inside, I know it changed how I buy cables.

My system at this point is not even close to the resolution as most systems here...yet.

When I was at THE SHOW a was in a demo for speaker cables. I would of loved to blind fold some of the participants and gone through the moves and sounds of swapping out the cables to my discretion/randomness and see if they were really hearing the wondrous difference or the perceived difference that was being spoken of. I heard no difference between the two. Now take those cables and put them up against some spool wire and hell yes there would be a difference.

I don't think ddk's speakers qualify in that same league of "vintage"!

I myself personally found a pair of nicely refoamed Altec Lansing Model Nines for $30 at a garage sale with the veneer in perfect condition, a Marantz Receiver at a church rummage sale for 10$ (forget model # its packed away) that weighs a ton and am going to build a little retro system. Even found someone to build me original foam grills in all the colors. Waiting for the right turntable to come along.

Back to your regular scheduled programming.

Hey man, there is a beverage involved here.

I called end of last week and asked about you, Joe and Mike. I really want to hear feedback from you 3 guys as you will run FULLY internally balanced digital and who better to give us restless natives the REAL juice. LoL

Suppliers seem to be on holiday for the European summer and other in Asia seem lax. LoL
Adam, you have faceplate issues that should be resolved by now, so give him a call. Other than that, your unit was done for a while. Hopefully they have been burning it in in the meanwhile. Update: he will try to deliver your today, he said. its done.

Joe and Mike were waiting on teflon sockets as the very last piece to complete the GGs. they had just arrived in on Friday after a month's delay due to supplier non-responsiveness to a problem with the initial order batch. He expected shipment by early this week. i will call later to ask how things are going there. Summer holidays are finally over here in Europe and people are getting back into the swing of things. Unfortunately the traffic is getting worse as a consequence.

Agreed with all of the above. The cable game is sticky as everyone and his brother are making them in the garage. Its hard to know what you're getting and whether its actually original engineering. Like you, I enjoy sleuthing Craigslist from time to time in the name of vintage equipment. Put those older speakers on a Starsound stand, and its surprising what sound you can get....

I spent over ten years in MN (Magnepan headquarters), and I am a fan....

Agreed

David has searched the world over for the cheapest most natural sounding spool cable he could find and as I indicated earlier he makes his own cables from spool cable bought in Asia for $300 for 50 meters. It was indeed a revelation
