Golden Gate DAC arrives.

Thanks Bonzo. I did participate in this thread on WBF because I heard a few 'horror' stories about the Elrog 845 and 300b tubes. However I was hoping that the Elrog 300b tubes would be reliable in combination with the GG because they are only used lightly in comparison to power amps. Just wondering whether my hope is justfied or not.

Joeinid here and on Audioshark has heard it, and Mike the site founder of Audioshark loves them. But try original WE 101ds as well. Also sfox who has had a lot of experiences with tubes recommends the rectis Sylvania 274b for VFM, but WE 274b to get killer sound.

Many thanks BruceD. Appreciate your advise. I have been working with SM devices for many years so I believe (and hope) that I know how they should be used. However, in my view focussing has never been their strongest point. But maybe you disagree in this respect?

Ah Ok Ac, Wasn't sure if you had done the prescribed orientation/etc-- no worries --good listening:)

As an aside if you have a TT maybe try the SM Weight--if you haven't all ready-I use one -recommended.

Yes, I have owned the SM record clamp and loved it but a friend of mine tried it out and loved it so much that I never saw it back. Anyway, I agree with you that this clamp is very good. According to some the Dalby record clamp is even (and clearly) better but I neverd heard that clamp.

What is your feeling about the aspect focussing and SM?

Using the Tripoint Troy se and in particular the Tripoint emperor made me much more aware of the importance of focussing in my two systems and although I like the SM items very much - after all I am still using them after so many years - focussing is in my view, as mentioned before, not their strongest point.

Thanks much Bonzo. I will surely will dive into some tube rolling in the near future. Wisnon and I have talked about it several times and as you all know he is big Lampi and tube rolling fan! (and, but this aside, Wisnon is a very knowledgeable and - much more important - very nice guy).

my experience with the Trinity dac and the Playback Designs related to my Herzan active isolation shelf tells me that might also be a GG focus improving solution. my Playback Designs is now on a regular shelf with Wave Kinetics A10 U8 footers and the Trinity dac is on the Herzan (stacked above my dart preamp) and I can tell that the Playback did lose a bit of ultimate focus and nuance. the A10 U8's are very very good in helping with focus, leading edge definition, snap and articulation......but not quite in the Herzan league. I'm guessing a large footprint chassis with all that rolled copper and then tubes too has got to be very susceptible to ambient and rack resonance. it's a big relatively loose beast. not a one piece billet type product such as the Trinity.

it would need the larger TS-140 like what I have under my tt. but i'll wager it would be the hot tip.

For those interested there is a SM clamp here in London for sale with the distributor - but price is steep at around 16- 1800 GBP, I think

I doubt that - give a direct call to Nikic by going to the NAT Audio website. I think they can drive high current as well for the stats

I may do so when I have a little more time on my hands and am back in London on a more regular basis, still, rather curious somewhat regarding the omission of any published Power output/Distortion statistics from NAT!

Thanks Mike. In my situation the GG dac is located on a wooden rack that is supported by Halcyonics vario devices. The Vario devices are located on my 'regular' woorden floor resting on wooden beams. In my Genesis set up the Trinity combo is located on a similar wooden rack and on similar Halcyonics vario devices. But there is a difference: on that side I have created an island because the floor on which my equipment is standing is completely disconnected from the floor on which the Genesis 1.1 loudspeakers are standing. Furthermore, this island rest on five concrete poles and was strengthened with additional layers of wood, making this island extremely heavy. I did not take these precautions on the Tidal LA side. So maybe this might be (part of) an explanation.

I understand about your 'island' approach.

in my previous home I had a crawl space below my dedicated listening room; which was a ground floor converted den. so it had a suspended wood floor. I was able to get a contractor to pour concrete pads under the speaker end of the room and under the rack area along the side of the room and then build braces which removed the 'slack' out of the suspended floor in those areas. it made a significant difference in image focus overall to have those 2 'islands'. but I did not isolate one supported area from the other so feedback was still possible across the wood floor. my Kharma Exquisite Reference 1D speakers I had at that time did not excite the floor at the same level as my MM7s can of course.

my current room has 6" of concrete. and I use the Wave Kinetics 2NS decoupling footers under the speaker spikes to reduce feedback through the concrete floor.

as far as your 'island'; is your room on the ground floor? how did you disconnect the floor under the Genesis from the gear Island. are the concrete posts beneath the floor or somehow on top of the floor?

Yes, my listening room is on the ground floor of an old building (built in 1902). Between my wooden ground floor and our planet/the earth is about 40-50 cm (air)space. The five concrete poles - on which the island rests - are under the floor and directly planted into the earth but we created special concrete platforms for the poles. The rest of the wooden floor, on which the Genesis 1.1 speakers are standing, does not rest on afore mentioned poles but on the regular wooden beams. Between the island and the rest of the floor we left some space of about 1 cm so these parts of the floor cannot 'touch' eachother.

Arrrrrffff! Now how could I be, without even the merest, less than subliminal, mention of DSP, mola-mola or plank and plywood horn speakers slipped in to the conversation!

NAT audio's distortion characteristic to power ratio may well prove to be quite stellar for SET amplification, however when a manufacturer would appear to choose to omit such an industry standard specification from website and review I consider that to be a curious exception to the norm.

Quick note guys that I added the word "DAC" to the title of this thread. I kept thinking you guys were talking about Golden Gate Bridge or something without it. :D

Well, if you are that easily fooled, I have a bridge to sell you...LoL

You are forgetting than I am an admin and can easily change the title to "Oakland Bay Arrives." :D I assure you no one has as much love for Bay bridge as they do for Golden Gate. :D :D

Golden Gate measures better than the Oakland as per our man's test

sounds like a smart approach to your situation. thank you for the details.
