Hint of new Magico products

I know progress is inevitable but I wouldn't be feeling too good right now if I'm reading this and just shelled out $180K for a pair of Q7s.

The most ambitious project we have ever taken. Four years in the making. Groundbreaking advanced diamond-coated beryllium diaphragm with optimized geometry. Created using state-of-the-art finite element analysis modeling tools, it pushes high-frequency reproduction one step closer to perfection, skillfully leveraging beryllium’s physical properties (closer to the theoretical ideal) yet without gaining the extra weight normally associated with diamond’s specific gravity. This new technology enabled us to increase the dome diameter to 28mm (vs. the 26mm of yore), improving many aspects of performance while enabling even greater power handling.

Combining these components with a new motor system in a new acoustically improved back chamber, the results are the lowest distortion possible today in a high-frequency transducer.
Hear it first on the new M Project.

It seems Alon is having fun with quoting his new tweeter. Magico information piece for M Project states the new tweeter as MBD-28. FWIW

Agree. Having said, new M is limited to 50 pairs so it is not an alternative to any current production Magico. Also I do not buy the argument that new M will be overall a better speaker than Q7. Q7 will still be best speaker while M will compete closely and in some areas may even exceed (perhaps tweeter component etc). Last but not the least, consider M5 buyers who burned 90k one year after they see Q5 at 60k which replacing a current production M5, how they felt! The current situation is not like that as new M is not replacing Q7. Rather it may be signalling next generation Q or another flagship series' main topology.

Many actually feel the M5 was a better speaker of the two.

Interesting comments. You would never read such comments on cars or cameras forums. On the contrary, everyone is always very excited about the next big thing ( I am by my PC eagerly waiting for Apple new IPhone announcement). Audiophile don’t seem to brace technology and progress. Why is that?

Very good question! I think part of the answer has to do with ethics: Apple users have known for almost half a year that the Iphone 6 was on its way. Magico kept customers in the dark and knew how it would upset the M5 customers. They should have given customers a fair chance. Just a thought... However, I absolutely LOVE Magico, esp. the Q7 and Q3. My favourite brand of loudspeakers. Really hope to hear this new M-project one day...but the chances are slim.

Not so sure about it. The MPro was announced a while back. It will probably be at least 6 months from the time of the announcement till the time it start shipping.
Regardless where you are in the cycle, there always going to be people who bought a product a day before the announcement of the next thing. How is it different than any other industry?

You are on a roll! Because you are correct again! The only thing i disagree with is the fact that audiophiles do not embrace new innovative technology. I think they do. So it still all boils down to money and the fact that "second best" gives you a pain in the stomach. The new Iphone 6 (a bit of a let down btw) does not replace the iphone 5. The Q5 replaced the M5, making it the latter a fossil. Maybe that is it: the idea of having bought something to find out that it is extinct:eek::p

Most of the audiophiles do embrace new technologies.
The look, built and new tech used for Project M are very attractive.

The only problem is the uncertainty the Project M has created.
The Q series Q5 was launched in 2010 and the latest Q7 in 2012.
Alan does not give us any info on the future of the Q series so a lot of the current Q series owners do have some negative feeling.
And I guess the sale of Q series, particularly Q5 & Q7 may have been adversely affected by the announcement of Project M too.

I hope that Alan can be more open and transparent and give us a roadmap of Magico.

Yes, brand/model cannibalism can leave a bad taste in the mouth from a current customer standpoint....of course we all know that anyone who buys a flagship speaker/model line can only have that rein within a brand/model for a limited time. The one's who don't change their underwear often are preferred, IMO.

Heck, I still have a Mini II. I've heard the Q1 is better, but I don't really care. The Mini II sounds awesome and looks fantastic. And, bought used, it was a great value.

If there is trickle down M technology and a new line up, buying a discontinued Q3 will be a great opportunity for those who can't afford the latest and greatest. Magico keeps pushing the envelope and we are better off for it.

I don’t own a Q, unfortunately, but I don’t understand why would any Q owner feel bad about anything (Perhaps a Q owner can chime in and enlighten us)?

What uncertainty we are talking about? If, as you say, we do indeed embrace new technologies then we should always assume that the next generation of products will be better, right? So what kind of road map you suggest Magico should give us?
This is all rather interesting; finally, a high-end company that is truly innovative, pushing the envelope of performance, changing the face of the industry as a whole for the better, and yet, we complain

Like I said, audiophiles do not embrace new technologies ;)

If I were to entertain another speaker, it would be the tidal La assoluta. That said, MBL Extremes would be next. Magico missed the Wilson X2.2 cut as evidenced by my current setup. Hey, it's only audio. No need to get the panties in a knot.

Those who need to be on the bleeding edge often do embrace new technologies. The rest of us, who can't afford to embrace them, simply wait.

Those lucky few who buy the 50 pairs of the M Project are supporting Magico's research, and what the designers learned in the development of that speaker will find its way into new products.

50 pairs, seems more like a 100 ?image.jpg

I am glad you agree with me, that would be first ;)
