Steve, interesting experiment. When you dropped the Horizon gain from 63 all the way down to 52, did you increase the volume of the Lamm pre accordingly so as to keep the. volume coming through the system the same

what I found interesting is that even at 61 I could hear the difference.

I always read that it's best to have a DAC with no volume or in the fixed position same thing . But a lot are using the volume to fine tune . Steve's setup might not need this and he's happy with it at 63 , I also wondered if Steve is at same db level when comparing

I did change the volume on the preamp and when I cut back on the Horizon gain and compensate by turning up the gain on my preamp it sounds somewhat recessed as compared to the volume at 63. In my system and for my ears the sound is just so much more alive and buzzing with information

63 and 62 to me are virtually identical but when I go to 61 suddenly the sound is slightly recessed. and I have to turn up
my preamp gain but once again it just sounds better at 63 and my preamp at 7. Depending on the genre I might listen at 6 or 8 but usually at 63 my preamp rarely changes from position 7. I still believe there is no right or wrong. I’m just stating what sounds best for me and my system
