LampizatOr Golden Atlantic + TRP

"I don't know when Lampi started using the new board but it must be fairly recent. My GA was built 7/2019 and it's got the old board. Maybe Fred can chime in on when the board has been changed. I'll report back on how it sounds but Lukasz has told Fred it produces a very large improvement in SQ."

Mine came back from Poland with the new JL sounds USB board in early May. According to Greg, the UK importer, it was the first with that board in the UK. I'm really impressed with the SQ compared with the Atlantic Plus I sent off for upgrade which itself wasn't too poor! I'd be interested to hear your thought when you get yours back. The new board also allows Windows users to play hi res DSD natively rather than via PCM.

Did the old one not have the native DSD capability?

Not sure what the Dawn tube is, but price certainly appears way too high. And even if they have the nominally right tube, I'd be wary of buying one from a general merchandiser. Like most all tubes, it's safe to assume that not all Shuguang GZ480 production is of equal quality, and a general merchandiser might not be getting the best or even close. You might check with an audio store, such as Mable Audio, tho last time I did they didn't have them and didn't know when they would. Golum thought it wouldn't be until next year. http://www.mableaudio.com/en/productview.asp?sid=8417

I can't speak to the quality of the tube, I'll let you know when it's received. Not sure why they refer to it as the Dawn tube, but it looks identical to the one you linked to in the photos. The price hike is explainable due to the limited supply.

Got two from this seller - all worked fine. Price ist high compared to what it was before factory closed but sound improvement is worth it imho.

That's the same one I linked to and purchased. Good to know it's legit!

I purchased quad EL51 with adapters to use in an amp which I am no longer pursuing. The bias probe points are behind the tubes and there is not enough space to get the multimeter ends in there without burning my hands. If you are interested let me PM me. Purchased the tubes and adapter from the vendor that @Golum had recommended.

Edit: I am located in US

Exactly. The comment on the previous page stating it would not run native DSD confused me, because my close friend has the Pacific in his system and we often listen to DSD files natively via Jriver with no issues.

No that version of the Amanero board didn't do DSD with Windows, it was fine with Mac OSX and Linux. On Windows it did DSD via PCM.
I think your are mixing up informations a little.
The Amanero 384 combo USB input board can manage/play DSD512 wonderfully, BUT until recently, it needed to have the correct firmware (on the Amanero) according to the used OS (Windows or Linux) on the endpoint in front of the DAC.
Now, there is one firmware version that handles DSD512 for Linux AND Windows.
The E53 digital engine in the TRP can handle/play DSD512 perfectly, the limiting factor is the Amanero firmware AND/OR the endpoint in front of the TRP.

SHOCKED o_O

My Lampi is at the factory. E-mail from Fred this morning informs me my GA TRP still has the old Atlantic engine NOT the DS53 engine. I assumed anything built 6/2019 would have the 53 engine. Upgrade cost is pretty significant. I know it's probably worth it but I feel I got a little hosed on my second-hand purchase.

It's also got the old caps, not the new Lampi caps. Will replace those too but that's not too bad price wise.

That’s too bad, but didn’t you ask Lampi about the S/N? Unless a seller is up front about original purchase dates and construction/mods, and maybe even then, I make it a habit of asking developers of about it and what the changes have been since then. Sometimes opens a discussion that leads to a better deal.

He told me it was current model. I look on this board and saw posts from April (before my DAC was built) that said Lukasz had switched over to Engine 53. My DAC was built 6/2019 so I assumed it had the current engine. Ultimately, my bad, but never occurred to me to ask.

Bummer is by the time I do the upgrades to bring it to current model I'll have more into it than if I walked in today and bought a new one. :(

Do you have an R2R Atlantic that accepts KT66/EL34/etc tubes? That might be worth keeping. Can’t be many of those around.

This is the only DAC I have. It's a current model GA TRP except that the original owner requested it with R2R engine and TDK caps vs engine 53 and Lampi caps.

For better or worse, this helps to explain why I haven't liked some of the same tubes as others have in the GA (the GEC KT66 for one). I don't have the same DAC as most of you.

I'm on the fence about changing to engine 53 because I like the R2R sound.

How come you didn't know what you bought? Didn't the seller hand you the summarizing Excel sheet issued and signed by the Lampizator factory? What about the label attached to the back of the DAC? What does it say? A high$$$ transaction like this should be clear enough.

I didn't get the excel spreadsheet before I bought it. There is no mention on the label on the back of the DAC. Neither Fred nor Lukasz knew until it was opened. When Lukasz checked the original order info he saw the purchaser had specifically requested it this way. I haven't figured out which way I am going to go because I really like the sound now and worry that I'll pay $1000E for the change and potentially like it less as 'better' to a large extent is subjective.

The original buyer heard it at Axpona. Fred said at that time engine 53 wasn't ready for GA so it was demo'd with the R2R engine and the TDK caps. The buyer specifically requested that version. I'm told four or five others did the same. Lukasz was only doing what his customers requested. When I started reading this thread it was stated that the GA was being shipped with engine 53 post-April. That was true, but not the one I ended up buying.

I'm curious what the differences are. In my SET system w/single drive speakers the Lampi sounds great. Will I like it as much in my main system (powerful solid state amp and robust speakers)? Don't know. I do know the GA sounds so organic, so much like vinyl w/o digital artifacts that I am somewhat reluctant to change it.

That's crazy. What is the function of the label if it does not identify the engine inside? If the label is so sparse, one would suppose the serial number could lead to a manufacturer's log to check for details without the need to ship the device around the world and opening it in the factory...

BTW since July I have been a happy owner of a refurbished R2R Atlantic TRP originally built in 2017. I was contemplating on buying a new Amber3 when I saw the pre-owned section of the Lampi website. I picked an original Atlantic but as I sent the email to them they replied it had already been gone but offered a TRP for the same price.

A few pages back I contrast the R2R Golden Atlantic and the newer 53 Golden Atlantic. To summarize, I've kept both. The R2R is in the living room, and the 53 is in the dedicated listening room.

I can see the marketing literature already for the 2021 Atlantic: "Combines the best aspects of the R2R engine and the 53 engine into our best ever engine" :)

You are not the first to have communication difficulties with Lampi that led to post-delivery issues. And yes, their production logs must show what was done, since a copy is included in the box to end users. In any case, when I did the upgrade to the 53, LampiNA (Rob) said he preferred the R2R version's sound, but the whole point was to go with tubes and be able to roll, i.e., sound shaping. I suspect they are both really close, but I wouldn't necessarily judge on the basis of the supplied tubes. The ones that came with mine were not the greatest and definitely not the somewhat warm sound I desire.
