Modern speakers vs Vintage speakers

When resolution and fine details are important to you in music, it becomes difficult to find something really better. is one of those speakers that you will never be sold again i have only the little Sister psyche.psy2Zuf2.jpg

I spent my entire audio life disliking Wilson Audio speakers because of the metal dome tweeter.

And now, I think, the XVX is my favorite cone speaker I've ever heard. I don't hold a grudge.

I doubt that Wilson holds a grudge against anyone for disliking a lifetime of their products. They say they know they're not for everyone. ;)

The metal dome tweeter was from Focal with Wilson modifications.

I don't have all the history in front of me but you can go back at least as far as 2008 to find a Wilson speaker with a silk dome tweeter. That would be the Duette.

The current Convergent Synergy Tweeter, 1 inch Silk Dome, I think, currently runs through the line-up from the WAMM Chronosonic through at least the Sabrina, though perhaps in different generations. It was introduced with the Alexandria XLF in 2011. Dave Wilson told Harley he researched it for three years, so maybe the Duette was a prototype(?) The original Sasha I owned had the metal dome; it was easy to hear less angularity and greater fluidity when I went to the first Alexia.

Personally, the one Wilson speaker that I quite liked was the original X1 Grand Slamm. I heard at length the MkI and MkIII of this speaker. 95db and an easy load. The Ti tweeter was not nearly as bad as it's being discussed here. it looked bad with a (near) ultrasonic peak but this was not really audible and is not worse than the peak that a lot of really high end MC cartridges make...could be it makes "air".

I haven't liked a single speaker from them with the soft dome tweeter with the exception of one demo in Munich with the Alexia and Nagra gear. After having ribbons, electrostats and good compression drivers and hearing several speakers with ion tweeters, I can't understand a soft dome on such expensive speakers...

I think the reason very expensive speakers are using soft domes again is they have improved in sound quality And are better than most if not all other types of tweeters.

I agree .
Regarding " wilsons" soft dome tweeter its most likely a scanspeak design.

The Tw i like most is the scan speak ringradiator design , it sounds more at ease then the soft dome version due to its pierced membrane connected to the aluminium wave guide / phase plug i reckon.
It also has a slightly lighter moving mass 0,3 gr as compared to 0,4.

Im now gonna use the revelator series with a more solid alu rear chamber , probably add some dampening material as well on the back of the rear chamber
This one will be in my next design

I thought about using the new tw with eliptical voice coil but FR wise the 28 mm doesnt look that good .
The 38 mm looks much better

I will use the 18 cm midrange with elliptical voice coil ( quit expensive ) to try and up the performance , possibly a more natural sounding paper composite membrane ,with better transient response and a slightly higher eff.

And the good thing is they are much cheaper as well .
Diamond ( synthetic ) cones are very expensive .

Btw its the housing / material that makes expensive speakers expensive in general , not the units that are being used

Recently I went to some stores that specialized in running shoes. When I liked a shoe, I wanted to confirm if this shoe was comfortable for doing 5ks regularly. They gave me a stare and said they have clients that do marathons and ultra marathons regularly that use this shoe. Perspective. I thought 5k under 24 minutes was cool.

When a friend of mine visited me in London from India and I took him out for a walk, his shoes started biting in 5 mins. I asked, did you not know your shoes bite? He said, I have never walked this long before. Couch potatoes, 5k runners, marathoners, all with different perspectives. Some think that a shoe that does not bite is cool. Some think a soft dome is an advancement.

The best Wilson I have also heard is Gian's friend's Grand Slam X1 that was run with Riviera amps, 50w hybrids. A particular mullard in them made the difference. Excellent source with Micro Seiki BL 111 and AN IO Japan Ltd field coil cartridge with a battery supply, and due to its 0.01 output was going through the Audio Note S6 SUT and the Uesugi phono with the Ortofon 309 arm.
