It's a nice day to start again ...
I spent my entire audio life disliking Wilson Audio speakers because of the metal dome tweeter.
And now, I think, the XVX is my favorite cone speaker I've ever heard. I don't hold a grudge.
Personally, the one Wilson speaker that I quite liked was the original X1 Grand Slamm. I heard at length the MkI and MkIII of this speaker. 95db and an easy load. The Ti tweeter was not nearly as bad as it's being discussed here. it looked bad with a (near) ultrasonic peak but this was not really audible and is not worse than the peak that a lot of really high end MC cartridges make...could be it makes "air".I doubt that Wilson holds a grudge against anyone for disliking a lifetime of their products. They say they know they're not for everyone.
The metal dome tweeter was from Focal with Wilson modifications.
I don't have all the history in front of me but you can go back at least as far as 2008 to find a Wilson speaker with a silk dome tweeter. That would be the Duette.
The current Convergent Synergy Tweeter, 1 inch Silk Dome, I think, currently runs through the line-up from the WAMM Chronosonic through at least the Sabrina, though perhaps in different generations. It was introduced with the Alexandria XLF in 2011. Dave Wilson told Harley he researched it for three years, so maybe the Duette was a prototype(?) The original Sasha I owned had the metal dome; it was easy to hear less angularity and greater fluidity when I went to the first Alexia.
I think the reason very expensive speakers are using soft domes again is they have improved in sound quality And are better than most if not all other types of tweeters.Personally, the one Wilson speaker that I quite liked was the original X1 Grand Slamm. I haven't liked a single speaker from them with the soft dome tweeter with the exception of one demo in Munich with the Alexia and Nagra gear. After having ribbons, electrostats and good compression drivers and hearing several speakers with ion tweeters, I can't understand a soft dome on such expensive speakers...
I agree .The Ti tweeter was not nearly as bad as it's being discussed here
And the good thing is they are much cheaper as well .I think the reason very expensive speakers are using soft domes again is they have improved in sound quality And are better than most if not all other types of tweeters.
Nothing special sorry to sayMy Alltime favorite Canton RCL
