Modern speakers vs Vintage speakers

The Songer speaker is modern field speaker but in Vintage style.

I enjoyed its intimate and fast sound in Pacific Audiofest.

5a3 push pull amplifier was also interesting.

How did you find the highs?

And the open baffle driver has a front and rear whizzer :)

I'm wondering what you guys are thinking about speakers looking like these:
PTT6.5-NFx-front-perspective-trans-440x440-1-315x315.png

It's a 6,5" mid-woofer from Purifi audio. It has a fascinating design of the upper suspension. Love it, or hate it?

Very interesting Thomas.
Was it the dipole that you heard?
I'd love to hear a pair.
But it's a bit of a trek to Oregon. From Scotland

Delicious althugh not extended all the way up.
I'm so glad you enjoyed them, Thomas. The following day we pulled them a bit further out into the room and pulled back the drapes even more, which gave us back some of that last octave treble extension. The rear whizzer likes reflective surfaces, and that made the back wall in our room a bit of a challenge. :) Cheers, thanks so much for coming by for a listen.

Welcome aboard?
Can i ask, is there anywhere in Europe i can listen to the open - baffle S2?

Thank you, I'm glad to have joined. :) I wish that I could say I have somewhere in Europe for you to listen, but we don't just yet. Pacific in Seattle was my debut show, and we'll be exhibiting again at the Capital Audiofest later this year, in November. Based on the reactions to both speakers this past weekend, it's going to be an amazing year.

@songeraudio sorry I missed you when I dropped by Sunday. I'm in Seattle and maybe we can meet & chat. Always good to know everyone local. Your work is stunning. Have never seen the carbon spider concept outside of that ( rare to see ) Fertin driver 10 years back.

Erik

PS: I deal a lot with vinyl front end and related ...

Thank you so much, Erik - I'm sorry to have missed you as well. Fertin's philosophy is right in line with my own, I love their approach. The SA design is primarily a flexible thermal polyurethane lattice, that holds the moving mass in light tension. That flexible lattice is then joined with the voice coil former by a lightweight carbon fiber composite collar at the center. I'd really love to hear a Fertin one day... I haven't had the pleasure of an opportunity yet though. They are so rare I may never, sadly.

I'd love to be in touch! Feel free to shoot me an email, or a comment on the website and we can continue the conversation. Again, I'm so glad you enjoyed the speakers, cheers.

In regards to Vintage Speakers; last week I replaced my Altec A7 stock crossovers with some custom Hiraga design units by Pete Riggle in Kennewick, Washington. I wired them to the speaker posts with Duelund Dual DCA16GA tinned copper multi strand wire in cotton and oil, which I must say is about as large a gauge as one should try to get into the Altec speaker wire clips. The crossovers and wire are still burning in, and the sound is still improving, but already the difference is as great as night and day. The bass so big now that it rattles the back plywood panel because of delimitation that was not apparent before the change. I believe the improvement in sound is due to two things, first the proven Hiraga design, second Pete's use of large NOS oil-filled capacitors.

The crossovers follow the Hiraga design mostly, as they also have switchable notch filters, allowing the ability to remove 2db, or 4db at 3.5kHz, but I found they sound best on my system set for flat response crossover at 525Hz. There is also a separate circuit for adding a Super Tweeter at some stage.

The only way I know how to add a photo to this site is by adding a video, so made a short one of two photos of the crossover (front and inside) as follows:

For any of you with Altec A5's or A7's who have not already changed the crossovers, I would recommend Pete's whole-heartedly. As I already implied, the improvement is not subtle.

I am sorry, wasn't able to get the inside included.

Can you please post some classical videos?

As soon as I replace the delaminating plywood panel on the back of the right bass cabinet so it doesn’t buzz I will gladly do so.
