My personal journey to MY SONIC LAB

once a dear friend of mine who is also passionate about music reproduction accompanied me to Berlin during a concert at "La Philharmonie", leaving the hall he said to me: this hall is a little low on bass and the eardrums are a little dry...... For me the sound I had just listened to (Mahler the titan) was wonderful "De gustibus non disputandum est" (and his system is for me one of the best heard in my city)... In F 1 the car that wins is always the one that it was born with the best balance between engine and aerodynamics, then the set-up and aerodynamic load varies based on the track but no matter how hard the others try, it always wins. Even a hi-fi system, if assembled well from the start, is the one that is most capable of highlighting the characteristics of an out of the ordinary device. I don't know your system and your listening room and if it's okay for you to load the MSL at 50 ohm, far be it from me to dispute your statement, my clarification is based only on what is prescribed in the MSL installation manual.
Very true and on this I agree.

Many cartridges I have tried in my system was supposed to be loaded with both 2-3-400 ohms, but it always sounded bright, sharp, edge’y, and lack of bass with that high impedance.

Having an all designed Dan D’Agostino amplification here, I have found that even the most analytical cartridges works best with a lot lower impedance here than in other systems. I have got this verified first hand by the swedish Lyra cartridge dealer, that could not believe his Lyra Atlas could sound so good, in the way it did here with that low impedance. So it is quite remarkable.

Same goes for Ortofon, Soundsmith, Koetsu, MSL, Shure, Nagaoka, AirTight, Miyajima, to name a few..

Hope you find the right loding for your MSL in your system and that it will sound great! Enjoy your music.

Jk, I’m curious about which Soundsmith you tried and what turned out to be its preferred loading in your setup. Thanks

fwiw, i had a PC1 supreme and went to MSL Platinum. Huge game changer. More articulate, lively and engaging. In comparison, the PC1 was boring for me

Hi Shaki,

Since you have so much experience with Master Matsudiara’s carts, have you come across any reference to the lifespan of their styluses? I have not found anything about possible lifespan of semi-line contact styluses used in his carts. Maybe something in the manuals of MSL carts?

Thanks in advance,
Aziz

Sorry, no experience , no information .

My Sonic Lab just announced a new cartridge:

My Sonic LAB Signature Diamond

a cartridge comes with a coated diamond cantilever, which seems to be a new development
The generator is typical MSL, low impedance (1,6ohm) and relatively high (0,5mv) output.

As the cart is hard to find, it would be very interesting to find in the future first listening experiences in this thread :)

It's great that Matsudaira is still around and innovating. Keep us posted if you find anything out!

I just received the TechDAS TD Dia , the Signature Diamond's cousin? brother?

It will be mounted on the last Q incoming AF10 so it will be a while.

I have an allocation from my local MSL source. Should I get one? Somebody please twist my rubber arm LOL

Does Matsudaira san make cartridge for Techdas? I know he makes cartridge for Airtight.

TechDAS and MSL are in a kind of walking distance, so Nishikawa and Matsudaira had a good and close relationship.
Since this times MSL became OEM for techDAS.

The Air Tight Cartridge body Design is more close to MSL core Design Philosophie, t
he techDAS carts Body Design was developed to meet their first Graham titanwand Tonearms.
(to my knowledge and observation)

The techDAS DIA cantilever looks indeed very similar to the MSL diamond signature cantilever

this would be an interesting comparison,
the pure Titanium one part TechDAS body Design compared to the two part MSL body Design.

Good morning, I have not found any specifications for the new My Sonic Lab Diamond head, not even on their institutional sites. What are the differences between the Diamond and the signature platinum? My feeling is that an operation similar to the one done a few years ago with the Transfiguration Proteus was done, to which the diamond cantilever was inserted to create the Proteus D. What do you think?

I've been in touch with the USA Importer (MoFi) who as of a few days ago knew nothing about this new model. I told them I'm interested in buying one once they can confirm pricing & availability.

Just heard back from my rep. Here's what I know.
US Retail $14,995
The specs are identical to the Signature Platinum, but it replaces the standard boron with an upgraded tapered diamond cantilever.
They have one coming in so I've placed an order for one, no ETA at this time.

in Italy the price list is 16,895 euros. looking at the photos it mounts the usual conical diamond cantilever already seen on other top products with the stylus mounted with a ring, if you make the change dollar/euro it should be 13.576,65 EUR. I don't understand.
