Natural Sound

There is this weird tendency, where some members spend a lot of time and energy taking apart Peters and for that matter also Ron's posts in their system threads. Why ? It is almost like you are trying to suck out all the fun and happiness being displayed in these threads. They are documenting and sharing their audio journeys, and i for one find these threads really interesting. I am amazed at your perseverance Ron and Peter, i would have given up long time ago. Kudos to you guys ! :)
It is for this very reason that I don't even bother offering my own audio journey (unless something is very impressive) I love where I am at and going to audio shows does nothing but disappoint. It is what it is.....but with that said, I ask myself, "why even get into it?".

Let folks learn the way they learn along their own audio journey.

Tom

Here is a video I made last night after some additional refinements and fine tuning of the set up.

The Mendelssohn is sounding great on your system!

Which SPU are you using? I have a Shindo SPU I bought recently and I love the combination of many of the best parts of the classic SPU attributes of weight, tone and dynamics with the clarity, resolution and speed of the Shindo version (on a new Mersault tonearm, based on the classic 12 inch Ortofons).

Despite those threads occasional forking off route cluetrain, it is indeed remarkable they survive in the face of little consequence the trolls who regulary try to render them.

So … Free and Fair comment on a thread , open to all members , Is “trolling” merely because you don’t like the content of those posts … Is that correct ?

Thank you LPG. The cartridge on this video is a regular Ortofon SL15 in an Ortofon SPU type headshell rather than an SME headshell. It is considerably heavier.

Well it very much is actually, try doing some experiments.
There may be some contradictions in your various recent comments, and it tells me that at some level, you may be confused. Don't worry, many of us are.

You seem to appreciate some live recordings published on YouTube (i.e. your thread titled "If YouTube recordings sound good, why do commercial digital releases sound so bad."). Your point is that the recording is critical, not so much the playback system, as you link those videos in your thread for all to watch (whether on their phone, computer, main system...).

It seems also that when people don't agree with your perceptions of these videos, you question whether we all hear "differently". I don't recall you ever questioning what playback equipment was being used. You don't even really explain which equipment you use yourself.

So it makes sense to conclude that if PeterA's system were recorded with the same care as those videos you refer to, then we should be able to evaluate the quality of his system. Moreover, if PeterA considers that his system sounds "natural" and close, on some level, to live acoustic performances, then with a properly recorded video, we should be able hear that, provided we have roughly the same perception/memory of live music as Peter.

Am I missing something?

Do you have suggestions as to how to record our systems?

The problem is not playback devices.

We could also find some contradictions in some of your (and others' similar) comments. If analog is a prerequisite to achieve "live" sound, what is the point in publishing and commenting on "digitally recorded" system videos listened to on basic digital playback systems (such as a phone)?

No one is trying to achieve “live sound” when sharing system videos over YouTube. The videos are for sharing easily somewhat distant impressions of one’s system. It is simply a way to compliment written descriptions. Sometimes they succeed, sometimes they do not.

Fair, but do you really believe you would get this comment if you had a digital source - digital being so often criticized here (not necessarily in your thread) for lacking these very qualities?

P.S. i mention digital, but the same applies to other aspects (speakers, amps, etc...).

I really do not know. You posted a system video of your system playing a digital version of the same recording. Did you get similar comments? I think people comment on what they hear.

Neither do I. It is just food for thought.

Please understand that I am not questioning the validity of these comments.

I fail to see (hear) how you can get "incredible dynamics and clarity" from a YouTube video. Regardless of how good the source is, or if it's analog or digital.

There is this weird tendency,
no purely normal.

action, with strong intent, begs reaction. Peter and Ron want to engage, love it even. and from time to time i'm like that too. with reaction comes all the rest. so the taking apart will always be along with the slapping of backs. or the more even tempered comments.

it does take effort to post a system and put yourself in the crosshairs. good on them for that.

Thank you Milan. My two system threads are a way for me to document progress and reflect on the changes. It is one place where I can share and bring everything together. It is mostly for my own use, but I am pleased others find value in the essays. I have also learned a lot about listening and then writing down my impressions. It is not an easy task, but I have learned a lot in the process. I have also gotten better at ignoring the noise and those who are simply here to giggle, distract, and insult. Their comments are revealing of character. I actually do not think that tendency is normal. I agree with you that it is very weird.

Little offends me, and I really appreciate kind words like these expressed by new member Joel27. This forum has always been about learning and sharing for me.

Since joining this forum I have gone back and read your original sublime sound thread and all 293 pages of this thread. Your journey has been one of my favorite learning/reading experiences in home audio for quite a while.

You do get your fare share of flak too Mike, but probably more back slapping, you are very neutral and compromising in your responses too. Even when you disqualify a product you do it without ruffling any feathers.:)

Especially when they are close personal friends. ddk_ut? Maybe hopkins needs to take a trip to Utah and bring stacks of benjamins with him? Watch for similar comments then!

p.s. your system DOES sound nice on that BIS recording, petera

I am glad you like the video Scott. Yes, David is a good friend, but if you have read any of his posts here, you quickly realize that he does not mince words and can be brutally frank, and not just about audio. I do recommend a trip to Utah. One could take in Zion Park and some great skiing. If invited, David's various systems are worth hearing, if only for the exposure to something quite different. There are four or five essays on WBF in a dedicated subforum, written by visitors about their trips and what they experienced. About half the people, audiophiles and otherwise, who visit David like his system. A handful are compelled to learn more and ask about his vast inventory of interesting gear.

David deals in what is rare and coveted. Prices reflect that, and we can each make our own judgements about value. He enjoys getting to know his customers and comments about their systems candidly. Suggesting that David only compliments the sound of gear he sells is a cheap comment and unwarranted.

That is not what I was suggesting. I don't even know what he sells and what you bought from him... I plead guilty myself to enjoying a lot of system videos (including your own).
