Report: Brown open to return to Cavaliers

CLEVELAND (AP) -- A person familiar with the situation says former Cavaliers coach Mike Brown is interested in returning for a second stint with the team.

Brown, who went to the NBA finals during his five seasons with Cleveland, is "receptive to the idea" of coaching the Cavaliers again, said the person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Saturday because the sides have not yet discussed a possible return.
Brown went 272-138 and went to the playoffs every year with the Cavs, but he was fired after the team was beaten by Boston in the 2010 Eastern Conference semifinals and replaced by Byron Scott. Brown spent one full season with the Los Angeles Lakers, who fired him five games into this season.
Scott was fired earlier this week following his third straight losing season.

Rose's absence requires answers

Bill Reiter, FOXSports.com

No more excuses. The time for Derrick Rose to stand up and come forward is right now.

That became self-evident Saturday night, when a Chicago Bulls team lacking its star player and worn weary by a season without him was utterly overwhelmed by the Brooklyn Nets, 106-89, in the opener of their seven-game series.

So much wrong with this Bulls team was on display. Head coach Tom Thibodeau’s tendency to load his players with too minutes. The fact that 32-year-old Kirk Hinrich, who’s filling in for Rose, is not nearly the answer. The injuries that have hampered their season, this time in the form of Joakim Noah playing only 13 minutes despite there being no other option for guarding Brook Lopez.

None of this is good. But all of that pales compared with the widening void Rose’s absence – and the nature of it – has produced.

This is not to say Rose should or should not play. A torn ACL, the injury he sustained in the first game of the playoffs last season, is no small thing, even if it has been almost a year since the injury. It is to say that Rose, who was officially cleared March 9 but has remained sidelined because of some nebulously self-defined waiting game only he seems to understand, owes his team, his fans and his game something.

It is the playoffs, Derrick Rose. Give us minutes or give us answers.

There are several lines that must be walked here, and certainly a critical one is Rose’s health. In any endeavor with huge stakes, enormous pressure, personal health and the chance for a legacy of either greatness or disappointment, a person should ultimately rely on his own counsel. So Rose’s decision-making regarding his career and readiness are his and his alone.

But there are other factors at play. This is sports and this is the playoffs and this is Chicago, where the tough are celebrated and the weak (or those perceived as weak) are ridiculed. Winning and effort and the idea that players best honor themselves and their teammates and their game through their own dedication cannot be ignored – particularly in Chicago.

Two years ago, with a Super Bowl berth on the line, Jay Cutler opted to sit out much of the NFC Championship Game. Against the Green Bay Packers, the Chicago Bears' most hated rival. Which meant Green Bay not only won that game, but also eventually the whole damn thing.

Cutler was absolutely killed – by fans, by the press, by most anyone who paid attention.

And Rose? Rose has gotten a six-week pass, and his silence has in large part been treated as part of the recovery process. It is not.

Whatever his teammates actually know or do not know, it cannot help that their star unfurls uncertain answers about God and time and needing to be 110 percent when anyone asks the obvious “When, Derrick, when?” question. Not to get picky here, but 110 percent isn’t actually possible. So that would be a really, really long wait. Which I wouldn’t even bother saying if we weren’t still waiting …

Imagine if it were LeBron James from two years ago, or Carmelo Anthony during Linsanity, or Dwight Howard this season, sitting out while cleared to play. While Kobe Bryant waxes eloquent about his own brutal, season-ending injury – and clearly yearns to return – Rose’s passive uncertainty has tainted a once-tough team with a similar kind of uncertainty and a perception, at least, of weakness.

Strength isn’t just physical. Sometimes in team sports it’s as much about chemistry, clarity and perception as it is on-court heroics. Just ask the Heat from two years ago, or Melo during Linsanity, or Kobe this past season.

Rose was once in the same class as those guys. He was the youngest MVP in league history two years ago and – unlike those others – an immensely likeable guy from Day One. That likeability has surely played a part in how easily he has been allowed to silently sit out as a team built around him with championship contention expectations has floundered.

I’m also a huge Rose fan. Love his game. Love what a great guy he seems to be. Love what he means to Chicago. Love how he played before he went down a year ago. So much so that I, too, urged patience when Rose opted to sit, urged understanding, urged everyone – mostly myself – to give him time.

Well, time’s up. Time should be up. Rose’s team just got mauled by a Nets team that two years ago wouldn’t have been in their class. Luol Deng, who led the league in minutes played per game this season (and last season) scored only six points on 3-of-11 shooting Saturday night. Noah, who also played a ton of minutes per game in the regular season, was so beat up he tried to play but was obviously unable. A Bulls team that competed with typical Thibodeau defense in the regular season gave up 106 points.

They are exhausted. Weary. Overwhelmed.

They need their leader. In one form or another.

Please, Derrick Rose. Come onto that floor in Game 2 and show us what you’ve got. Or come to that microphone and tell us, with clarity and honesty, when you’ll have what you once did and why there is a six-week gulf between what your doctors believe and what you believe.

Give us minutes or give us answers.

GSW vs Nuggs last night was a terrific game with Denver finally losing their first home game since January. I can stop remarking at how pure a shooter Steph Curry is. I expect to see him garner the MVP award at some point in his career

Great news for the Lakers with another big man.....

Jordan Hill Cleared to Play

by Mike Trudell

It’s been rare that the Lakers have gotten good news on the injury front this season, but that’s what we have in advance of Wednesday’s Game 2: reserve big man Jordan Hill has been cleared to play.

Hill, who had surgery on his left hip on Jan. 23 that included removal of loose fragments, repair of a torn labrum and a microfracture procedure to repair damaged cartilage, was expected to be out for the season.

Instead, he has steadily progressed, participating in contact drills throughout the week with no setbacks. As such, the training staff cleared him for game action.

Whether or not he plays in Game 2 will be a coaching decision, but look for him to certainly see the court soon. Hill will most likely be used as a backup center/power forward, allowing Dwight Howard and Pau Gasol additional rest, while competing for minutes with Earl Clark.

The Lakers and the Celtics again seem to mirror each other even at this point of the season. Both are down 0-2 and I think only pride is making them believe they can still make it past the first round.

C's are definitely showing their age collapsing in the second half of both games against the Knicks. Garnett can't score anymore and is looking every year of his 35. Plus the C's don't have anyone to match up against Melo and less than anyone against J.R.

True, true. Time for KG to retire. And Pierce too. And free up cap space for younger talents.

Sadly Pierce is the only one really playing ;) Well maybe Green.

Will Dwight Howard have any better championship options than L.A. Lakers?

interesting read especially about the Clipps

That was an interesting article. I was listening to Colin Cowherd (ESPN Radio) on the way to work this morning and he gave a long speech about why Howard won't sign with the Lakers.

My best guess, if not the Lakers, it would be Dallas or Houston. Maybe the Lakers will decide they don't want him - could be time to blow it up and start again for them.

As for the Clippers, I don't see him signing there. Clippers already have a center that can't hit free throws in D'Andre Jordan. :)

Dwight doesn't like playing second fiddle to Kobe so he probably would not like being the third option behind CP3 and Blake Griffin.

IMO you follow the money and when other teams can only offer $85M, the Lakers can offer $120M. I believe he will sign with the Lakers

He needs to grow up however otherwise his immaturity is not conducive to LA type sports

Talk is Lakers will amnesty either Gasol or MWP

He should choose a lottery bound team and prove he is a franchise player.

Lakers will probably amnesty Pau Gasol. Maybe Kobe, too. :)

Sending those two off would save them $50 million in salary plus even more in luxury tax.

One theory has Kobe getting amnestied, sitting out next year to recover and then re-signing with the Lakers the following year. Not likely but food for thought.Best for the Lakers but maybe not Kobe.

Maybe he can convince the Cavs to give him a max contract. Dwight, Kyrie Irving and LeBron in 2014! :D

Thunder's Westbrook to have knee surgery

By The Sports Xchange

The Oklahoma City Thunder announced Friday that guard Russell Westbrook is out indefinitely after tearing the lateral meniscus in his right knee.
Westbrook will have surgery to repair the injury, which he sustained during Game 2 of the Thunder's playoff series against the Houston Rockets on Wednesday.
It is not known how long he will be out, but Yahoo! Sports reported that a source close to Westbrook said that he might return by the NBA Finals if the team makes it.
Metta World Peace of the Los Angeles Lakers returned from the injury after two weeks.
"Our players' health is our first and foremost concern," executive vice president/general manager Sam Presti said in a statement. "The Thunder's medical team and several specialists we consulted with determined that Russell undergo a procedure to address the issue.
"We have thoroughly discussed this with Russell. Despite being the competitor and teammate that he is, he respects and understands the decision and is committed to come back even stronger. Certainly Russell is a leader and core player for this team, but we are in the midst of the playoffs and I know other players are determined to step up and contribute. We have a resilient group of players who have always taken pride in playing as a team and that approach will continue."
Westbrook, a three time All-Star, averaged 23.2 points, 7.4 assists, a career-high 5.2 rebounds and 1.77 steals in 82 games this season.

Lakers grabbing 7th spot instead of 8th didn't turn out to be a better thing after all. Double ouch.

I always wondered why the Lakers' depth chart looked the way it did this season. 4 or is it 5 natural point guards? What was the front office thinking? In hindsight it's no wonder Kobe and company were ground to mush over the length of the regular season.
