NFL Start Of Season

Let's not get too excited Seahawks fans...last week everyone was convinced the 49'ers were the best team in football.

Apparently the Seattle stadium is the loudest in the NFL. Not a great place for an opposing, basically rookie, QB to fine tune his trade. If you were a SF fan, it was down right ugly!

Ugly is an understatement. I sat at Candlestick through SF's horrible 2-14 season but had to turn the TV off last night after Kap's pick. Just had to stop the torture. Thank god for my stereo. It helped...a little.

I don't much care for Carroll and the team up north but I can appreciate what he and the team have done so quickly. I'm a Wilson believer now...sort of. Showed a lot of grit and poise last night. Their defense with the crowd's help is very very tough.

If Fischer can turn the Lambs around the NFC west will be fun to watch.

Hope we see SEA again in the playoffs. Just don't want to see them up at Qwest again.

49ers sign kicker Cundiff to compete with Akers

By JANIE McCAULEY, AP

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers signed kicker Billy Cundiff on Tuesday to compete with struggling veteran David Akers.

``He's thrilled with the opportunity to be in a position to help the team in any way he can this postseason,'' said Cundiff's agent, Paul Sheehy. ``It's a great opportunity, with a great organization.''

The team announced the move a day after coach Jim Harbaugh said that the NFC West champion Niners (11-4-1) - off this week as the NFC's No. 2 seed - planned to try out kickers because of Akers' prolonged funk.

Cundiff was released by the Washington Redskins on Oct. 9 after missing 5 of his 12 field goal attempts. He had already worked out once for the Niners on Nov. 27 before they invited him back this time, as Harbaugh initially chose to stick with Akers.

Now, Akers and Cundiff will compete to see who kicks in the team's NFC divisional playoff game in prime time Jan. 12 at Candlestick Park. San Francisco will play Green Bay, Seattle or Washington.

The 49ers cleared a spot on the 53-man roster for Cundiff by waiving linebacker Eric Bakhtiari. Players had Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday off before returning to practice Thursday - so that will be the first look at both kickers together.

Cundiff spent the 2009-11 seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, who are coached by Harbaugh's big brother, John. But Cundiff was cut after last season, when he missed a potential tying 32-yard field goal in the closing seconds of the AFC championship game that sent New England to the Super Bowl.

Jim Harbaugh said Monday he might keep two kickers on the roster and open up a competition.

``If we had two on the roster at the same time, then they can kick in practice,'' Harbaugh said. ``And that's an option. That's a possibility. I think there are three options. We go forward with David. We bring in a new kicker. Or, we have two and let them compete for the job. We'll make that decision as we go.''

Akers, who made 44 of 52 attempts in his sensational 2011 season and first year with San Francisco, is just 29 for 42 this year. He is only 7 for 13 from 40-49 yards and missed wide left twice from that range in Sunday's 27-13 victory against Arizona in the regular-season finale.

The 38-year-old Akers signed a three-year contract as arguably the 49ers' biggest offseason acquisition ahead of the 2011 season, aside from the hiring of Harbaugh. And he delivered at nearly every opportunity - until recently.

He had a 21-yard attempt blocked by Red Bryant in a 42-13 loss at Seattle on Dec. 23, and Richard Sherman returned it 90 yards for a touchdown.

The 32-year-old Cundiff joins his sixth team in 10 NFL seasons. He has also played for Dallas, New Orleans and Cleveland.

Andy Reid, Chiefs reach agreement in principle

Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs have agreed in principle on a five-year contract that will make Reid the 12th head coach in Chiefs history, a league source said late Friday morning.

The source said the deal was not yet signed but said all that's left is for some contract language to be agreed on. He said all major issues have been agreed on and a formal announcement by the Chiefs should come soon.

The final major stumbling block between Reid and the Chiefs was eliminated earlier Friday morning when the Chiefs fired General Manager Scott Pioli.

Pioli, who was part of the group that interviewed Reid, had been the Chiefs’ GM since January 2009.

His dismissal cleared the way for Reid to bring in his own general manager. A source said that will be either Tom Heckert, the former Eagles and Browns general manager, or Packers Director of Football Operations John Dorsey, who was director of college scouting in Green Bay when Reid was on Mike Holmgren’s Packers staff in the 1990s.

Reid has remained very close to both Heckert, who left the Eagles for the Browns after the 2009 season, and Dorsey.

Sources told CSNPhilly.com early Friday morning that Reid and the Chiefs had met past midnight Thursday night into Friday morning and had agreed on major portions of an agreement.

Reid, fired Monday by the Eagles, emerged quickly as the Chiefs’ top – and only – candidate for their head coaching vacancy. The Chiefs fired Romeo Crennel Monday after they went 2-14 in his only full season as head coach. He was interim coach for three games in 2011.

The only other candidate the Chiefs have interviewed is Falcons special teams coach Keith Armstrong, a Bucks County native. That fulfilled the Chiefs’ Rooney Rule obligation to interview at least one minority candidate.

Reid won more playoff games with the Eagles (10) than the Chiefs have won in their 53-year history (eight). The Chiefs’ last playoff win came in 1993, with 37-year-old Joe Montana at quarterback.

Barring a last-minute setback, Reid will be the Chiefs’ fifth head coach since 2005.

Reid is expected to bring in Juan Castillo and Doug Pederson from his Eagles staff.

They don't need a coach, they need a quarterback.

'Skins have an extra QB and would love to have the number one pick. We could trade it for a lineman and a safety.

Watching the 'Skins game. These people are destroying the Kid. Messing up with the future of one of the best they ever had .. :( What surprised most is that Washington Skins fans seem to accept this treatment of the Franchise

Congrats Seahawks. See ya next year.

The Hawks just took out RG3!! Awesome game....

Not downplaying the superb play by the Seahawks defense but it was clear that RGIII was hurt and has been since that ill-fated run where he wrecked his knees and was allowed to come back . when it was clear it couldn't, shouldn't play...
The way the Seahawks look they seem to be ready for Hotlanta ... The other is as good as they get, maybe less flashy than RGIII but as effective.

Disclaimer: I am a die hard Redskin Fan. It i is clear the the Seahawks had no answer for even a lame. RGII. More disturbing was there inability to get receivers open despite the fact their quarterback had a eternity to throw. With RDII healthy and a pass rush they would have been in deep trouble.
We all know excuses are for loser. They could not even score a touch down when RGII left a ball setting on the 2 yard line.

Go Seahawks!
