i think of tube amps i wish i had almost every day. how can one not do that? but i already went down that road and discovered switching back and forth between amps is not something i like to do, in fact i hated doing it. so now i get over my urge every day. knowing tomorrow it will happen again.

i think you should just get a second system in another room to play with SETs. You can do with an additional table that goes into that room.

Ron can also set one up on the outdoor deck of his pool. He can move the Denon there and play with some SETs.

i will speak to the wife immediately about SET's and FLH's in the living room. or re-task your bedroom?

how do you think that might go? odds?

should be fine. She is probably bored of a similar system style and room after 20 years, no matter how good. She doesn’t go out to shows etc to check out gear, so she will find this a nice variation

I foresee agreeing with this fully. Ultimately I really do not want two amps.

The idea of having to plan my listening session between rock plus big classical versus vocals and simple jazz does not appeal to me.

I know exactly what would happen: I by myself would always use the SETs -- and then I would switch over to the VTLs only when my friends come over.

Nonetheless, a high power SET on my speakers is the only remaining item on my audio bucket list. I have been talking about this for a long time. I know I will have to scratch this itch.

Why, that implies either you or your friends are not good at hearing.

Oh, I'm sure my friends are better at hearing than I am! I I am very good only on tonal balance and on channel balance.

What I mean is that there is no way 60 watts or 120 watts of anything is going to untangle and separate and delineate the mass of instruments in complex symphony orchestra classical music the way 750 watts can. 60 watts or 120 watts simply is not going to have the headroom to scale effortlessly.

Why would I want to put my "fantasy" SET amps on inferior loudspeakers? :p

who said they would be inferior? it would be a set based system. You might like it better

this will get a chuckle out of her at breakfast. maybe a few choice comments too. but she can take a joke, so no worries.

widespread misunderstanding
8watt on a high eff horn system may have way more headroom than your 750W VTL on the monkey coffins

he is comparing 60 SETs Vs 750 Siegfried on the same Gryphon speaker

The point Ron, is if the SETs underdeive the ribbon even midrange will sound boring. SETs is not about just adding a tube to colour sound

I personally compare driving a signal through a high power amp into monkey coffin, is like pushing a cow through a meatgrinder to get a squeek out in the other end
why waist all that power when you can get away with less than 10 into a hi eff transducer

I understand that. I'm not looking to color. I'm looking to purify. May our heavenly Father reach down from the heavens and banish that push-pull distortion from the analog waveforms of my life! Heal ye! Heal ye! Amen!

Subjective hobby, different preferences. The high-efficiency transducer does not give me (my ears/brain) the open-ness and in-the-room presence of a solo vocalist I hear from panels.

sorry, but I am not coming to the west coast for a while, son
