interesting...just so I understand...are you saying your experience is that panels generally end up with a residual edge in this 4khz-6khz region due to something intrinsic to the way panels work and must be designed? Or are there specific panels which have this edge vs others which do not?

Interested because of course if the former, then I guess the Clarysis end up in the same position. And if the latter, then of course the question is if Ron does not hear that edge with the Clarysis, does he go Auditorium with Gryphon sub towers (which I think could be outrageously fun...)

I think I have sensitivities like Ron and one reason I’ve liked the Clarisys is their midrange balance.

Yeah, everyone uncritically fell for some dogma that the cult leaders of the high end pronounced, no questions asked.

I do have a high-quality tone control on my Octave preamp. I practically never use it, however . It's usually in bypass mode.

But:
It does come in super handy with some anemic rock recordings. Why would you not want to have a tone control for such occasions? It's the difference between unlistenable crap sound and enjoyment.

It seems possible the Loki Max could be a decent common sense solution perhaps best surgically applied to recordings that need some help. And when turned off it will have no evil impact on sq real or imagined.

Yes, specifically the BG planar magnetic driver. I have owned other ribbons that didn’t have this issue

It is my understanding that Ron bought these speakers some years ago. And that his new listening room was finished a few months ago (stunning looking room by the way). In my view the best way to find the right speakers for a room/ system is always to try them at home prior to a purchase. One never knows how they will integrate in a room, regardless of the price (in this case quite high).

I have heard the Pendragons and they were impressive, in an complete Gryphon system. I am certainly not in a position to say anything about the sound in his room (how could I), but to buy a pair of speakers at this price level a home audition is a must IMO.

yours was never an all out attempt. And from what Brad is saying it wouldn’t have helped in this case as the BG ribbon was bright with in room audition or out.

I will add that not everyone is bothered by this. I did find women were less impressed and more likely to find them bright.

And we don’t read visitor reports identifying this either. I did hear brightness on the videos but it didn’t show up on the in room measurements that Ron shared.

Who knows? Ron may keep both speakers.

Forget about the videos. They are pointless and utterly useless as a representative of the actual sound of the system. It had none of the exaggerated brightness you hear in the videos.

I understand your point Al. But I heard brightness in the videos and now Ron is complaining about brightness from the speakers, so perhaps the videos don’t represent the sound of the system, but I heard brightness. I just didn’t know the cause.

This is next to impossible on a $200k loudspeaker.

The good news is that the dripping sound turned out not to be an actual water escape. The bad news is that it was caused by a contraction and expansion of pipes in a mess of conduits and pipes and wires. Untangling those took three weeks and cost a lot more money than an actual water drip.
