I think you can see the colors much better in this photo. The powder-coating on the frame looks like stainless steel, and the top looks like concrete.



Peter designed the stand so that both the top and all of the legs and the cross-beams can be filled with sand.

Peter custom makes these at a genuinely reasonable price.

Ron, congratulations on the rack. Does Peter offer an option of shelves for a phonostage? Also what is the interface between the top and the base? Will you be feeling your rack with sand?

Yes, Peter will make these stands 100% custom so you can have one shelf or two shelves or whatever you want.

The legs are 4 inches square. The stand looks very much like the commercial grade stands which support laboratory instrument platforms such as the products from Kinetic Systems or Newport.

I have a shelf which fits onto the open cross-beams. The Brinkmann RoNt III power supply will go there.

The table top is MDF, I believe. The top can be filled with sand, as can the legs.

At this point I am not filling the legs with sand, as I do not know if this stand will be in its current location permanently. If David sells my Nothing stands with the AS-2000 (which would make sense for a buyer because they are a beautiful matching combination which is why I ordered the package of turntable + stands that way in the first place) then I will fill this stand with sand, remove the Herbie slider feet presently protecting the carpet, and let the metal footers attached to the legs of the stand bore through my new carpet.

And what is the interface between the top and base? I’m also curious about the shelf and the lower part of the rack. How are they attached?

Is the new rack the same height as the Nothing Rack you ordered? I seem to remember that the latter was a custom height and considerably taller.

No; I think the top of the platform is about 36" off the floor.

I've been driving my local audio friends crazy with my alternative "fantasy" amp project. Time to ask the forum.

For my system and listening preferences and musical genre preferences what are the pros and cons of switching from the VTL Siegfried IIs to:

Absolare SET (52w, 845 x 2)

AM Music 833S Ultima (120w, 833)

MastersounD PF100 (120w, 845 x 4)

Trafomatic Drina (140w, 450TL)

Haha! No, not for me. I think that's about as far from SET as you can get!

In direct comparison between D'Agostino Momentum and Alieno OTL on Cessaro Zetas I preferred Alieno.

Nothing more than personal preference, but if I have to choose solid-state I prefer darTZeel and Gryphon over D'Agostino, and D'Agostino over Boulder and Soulution.

The Io evolved over time to be more tonally neutral/objective and transparent and resolving than my original Io. The Siegfried II evolved over time to be more tonally neutral/objective and transparent and resolving than my original MB-750s. I definitely do not want to add solid-state to this chain.

The problem with this project is that it means in every direction a rare, exotic and expensive amplifier. And this means each candidate would be extremely difficult to re-sell.

For example, there is no way to know if I would prefer in my system a Wavac 833 or a MastersounD PF100.

I have been pursuing very seriously Allnic A-10000s (1610 x 2, 100w, PSET). MSRP is US$89,000. Even if I could get them at an amazing price, I likely would be stuck with them, as they would be extremely difficult to resell. People naturally and reasonably are very concerned with an amplifier tube that has only one (1) source of manufacture in the whole world. Such an amplifier could easily wind up as a doorstop.

tube amps are not fungible items. maybe excepting certain Kondo models and a very few others. disposing of them will be painful. therefore buying a nice tube amp "used" as a secondary plaything is more sensible if you realize it might not 'stick' in your system. have an exit strategy.

i think of tube amps i wish i had almost every day. how can one not do that? but i already went down that road and discovered switching back and forth between amps is not something i like to do, in fact i hated doing it. so now i get over my urge every day. knowing tomorrow it will happen again.
