Ron's Speaker, Turntable, Power and Room Treatment Upgrades

I have no idea if Zagats is highly thought of today, but in the 1990s and 2000s Zagats ratings were taken pretty seriously in Manhattan.

If you go down their list it's good food. Whether the top rated will be your 1 or 10 doesn't matter.

Respectfully I think we might be talking about different things.

When I refer to Manhattan as my benchmark for food quality in restaurants I am thinking of the Zagats top 25 or so rated restaurants in Manhattan. An overall sense of this list of top restaurants in Manhattan developed from eating in most of them several times (especially Eleven Madison Park, but also Lespinasse, Le Bernardin, Daniel, Mondrian, Felidia, Il Nido and Cafe Boulud) over the course of living in Manhattan for many years (mostly treated by accounting firms and law firms) is what I have in mind when I evaluate restaurants in other cities.

I've paid the same or more for not as good of meals elsewhere that you'd get in Manhattan, at many of Zagat's picked places (barring a couple you listed). And I'm saying that you can find very good food in NYC at many places. Overall for quality food I'd rank it as being lower cost than so many other places that are attempting to be high end establishments. The food is just better. And I ignore the bad places because who cares if there's awesome food all over? The bar is just much higher in NYC.

I remember between Rhapsody and audio arts there is a place that does a fantastic tuna belly sandwich for audiophiles on the go. Just $5.

Manhattan is great for low priced food too. Also the average sushi is so much superior to London and other parts in the EU, you really need to pay up to have good sushi in London.

In the US people are fairly fanatical about Sushi being good. A lot of people maybe aren't or don't know, and some how poor Sushi places survive... probably off of the one night a week they have fresh stuff. On the other hand it's well know a lot of Seafood places will and should only have fresh stuff. It has never been abnormal for restaurant owners to have their own plane and fly stuff in every morning. (although some inner land areas prohibit it due to distance)

I'm sure we read the relevant guides for where we ate and definitely weren't eating cheaply at night, but I can't remember where now. As a rule American food isn't taken at all seriously here in the UK, whether that is fair or not.

I hate to say this but Americans are largely seen of mass consumers of absolute junk over here. And there's lots of horror stories about having to eat unsafe US food when we finally completely leave the EU.

That's the UK media for you. The big one is US chlorine washed chicken.

I'm glad I'm still alive, since I'm happy with a hot dog and a diet cola.

Well... You're not wrong. There is a lot of horrible food in the US. It never ceases to amazing the stuff some people eat.

Average day people are much more foodies now, so times have changed and ANYWHERE you go has better food than it use to, but not all new places are good. I'm too young to know what NYC was like at your time there.

Yeah the same is true here. Food has just gotten a LOT better over the years. Both eat out and in.

I think US barbeque looks great. And Maine lobster. And the US surely is the master of the burger, not that I am sure that is something to be proud of;)

Ron we did eat at some expensive places, the best of which was a French restaurant.

We do that here too. I remember walking of Heston Blumenthal's Fat Duck with a bill for £800 for 4 people years ago. Not cheap now nevermind then. I have a signed book to prove it LOL.

About three years ago we emptied the house being renovated and put almost everything into long term storage. Last week I went to the storage facility and I removed a bunch of audio items I want to sell. I retrieved my Transparent Audio speaker cables and two pairs of 30 foot Transparent Audio interconnects. I listed these in our Classifieds section.

I have been thinking that I would need to keep some device to spin digital discs, if for no reason other than to have a source which can easily repeat play set-up tracks. But I think I will just get some basic streamer/DAC to play Qobuz instead.

Amidst several items I completely forgot I had I found three  Arcam integrated amplifiers, an Arcam Diva T61 tuner, and a Sony SCD-C2000ES SACD Changer. This last one is a rare vintage item in the uncommon black finish which belongs on every audio collector's top shelf!;)

I found a professional iambic Morse code key. This may be useful for communicating with extraterrestrials.

I also found a very nice Magnum Dynalab FM tuner, which I am going to keep.

If you find any western electric drivers in there let us know. Since this has been going on so long....

Ron, open some of those boxes covered in tumble weed. I predict you'll find inside them an AS2000, Gryphon Pendragons.

The Pendragons may be found in wood crates covered in tumble weeds, as long as the ribbon drivers are not floating in spider webs.

current thinking about locations of components on racks (2 racks, 4 shelves per rack):

AS-2000 + motor box l VTL control unit

Io control unit l VTL connection box

Io power supply l empty shelf

Io power supply l streamer + DAC
