Ron's Speaker, Turntable, Power and Room Treatment Upgrades

I believe that, in general, digital recordings are best reproduced by DACs, rather than by remastering and conversion to vinyl. A few of my favorite albums were digitally recorded. As I hope for the installation of my new stereo system sometime this decade it is fun in the meantime to think about details and to research options on various stereo system open projects.

Wondering what is the best-sounding and highest resolution version of, say, Sarah McLachlan's Surfacing album makes me suddenly understand the merit of being able to store audio files on a hard drive (as opposed to streaming all digital recordings). I now see the merit of combining a digital streamer with a hard drive storage capability.

Hi Ron!

I'm glad you see it that way! Streaming is great for casual listening and discovering/exploring new music. But it's very likely it won't have the best sounding (digital) version of the particular album you want/like.

With Roon, it's rather easy to compare between versions, and I find it fun and interesting sometimes to run these comparisons, with albums I know well. Once a favorite is found, it's easy to "mark" it in Roon so you know, at a glance, which version you found the best.

Ah, unfortunately I can't help you with this particular album...

Thank you, Alex!

While I was in the storage warehouse a few weeks ago I also rescued one of my Ekornes Stressless lounge chairs so I could sell it locally. I have been using it casually as a lounge chair in the den at the house we are renting.

Now I remember why I always thought that Ekornes Stressless lounge chairs are so comfortable . . . because they are!

I have an Ekornes in Santa Cruz. I disengage the knobs to extend it flat and sleep in it all the time.

I don't want to buy anything new, so my listening chair options out of furniture in inventory are the black Ekornes Stressless President chair above or the de sede couch below.

I always found the Ekornes really ugly, specially in black, this is much more attractive IMO.

David

Tinka agrees with you. de sede actually is an expensive leather line made in Switzerland. The couch is something I got for the apartment in Manhattan 20 years ago.

The couch just is not comfortable like the chair is.

There are many Italian brands that are more tasteful and exceptional in comfort and built quality. Minotti is one of them. Italian does it better when it comes to furniture imo.

Yes, Tang, thank you. I like some of the chairs from Poltrona Frau.

Ron, you sat in a black one like this when you visited me.....it's Italian too. i've had it 5-6 years. footrest and headrests fold back. metal frame. not cheap.

I'm jealous of the furniture brands you guys must see in stores where you live... we simply do not have stuff like that where I am.

my K10 DoDo was shipped to Seattle from NYC but i bought it at a local showroom from an interior designer. i'm sure there are interior designers in Spokane that can access the same chairs. but you will only see stuff like this in person in the major design center cities like NYC, LA, London. i tried to buy it on-line but was referred to a local dealer. at that time there was not a choice for on line purchase. it was even hard to get a price on line.

I guess so... I’m not particularly interested in traveling right now either.

While I am aesthetic driven largely, I definitely want to sit before I end up with chairs I don’t like.

We do have a store with quality furniture but the style prefernaces of the area means the stock reflects it.

Yes, I remember! It was very nice!

But I am not buying anything new. I have to pick a chair out of the current inventory.

Just for fun I spent almost 3 hours at an Ekornes dealer yesterday. Ekornes now makes a more contemporary office-type chair with a low back:

It was typically Ekornes comfortable, and not nearly as clunky and old-fashioned looking as the round wood base models. But the back is pretty low.

At the same store I came across a brand I was not familiar with -- Via Seating. That company makes a very comfortable and highly adjustable office chair with a medium height back (perfect height for me so the ears are not in front of headrest) called Carmel:

Today I went to Relax the Back to revisit the Lifeform Chair I researched three years ago. I was ambivalent about it three years ago because I felt that despite its myriad adjustments, it was just not as naturally comfortable as is Ekornes. Plus I remember the leather seat was not that comfortable.

Today I saw a Lifeform chair covered night and leather but in playing low-rent polyester fabric. This thin fabric upholstery, however, allowed the cushiness of the underlying memory foam to be manifest on the butt. This time the Lifeform chair was very comfortable!

But then I went back home and plopped into the big Ekornes President lounge chair; there just is something incredibly naturally comfortable about that Ekornes recliner.

Woah, I just saw this chair by ERA Office Chairs. This thing looks super comfortable! And it is made in Los Angeles, California.

But it only comes in a high seat model.
