Brad/Morricab has done me a service by highlighting the Balance
There's no doubt the motor may be a limiting factor in my current tt, and prob across many so-called top tts
That Brinkmann Sinus motor w it's overspecced 500g flywheel looks a marvel of power, torque and accuracy
Fully kitted out w a 12" arm and Ront tubed psu to the motor, it looks class leading in the semi affordable category that incls Kuzma XL, GP 1.5, SME 30, TW Black Knight, and half the price of the Kronos, Kodo, AF2, Wave Kinetics
I would love to know how the Balance and Kuzma XL motors compare

Not sure it's motor can compare to the Sinus on the Balance
Kuzma is a stellar choice, you have nothing to worry about
I heard the XL DC v a CEC/Kondo digital front end, w Spectral pwrd Apogee Divas and tbh, it wasnt even close
The XL went deeper, wider, faster, heavier, and was simply more immersive than the digital

I said me and my installer both struggled a bit setting up the analog rig
W failing eyesight and arthritic fingers, it was a trial
Handling vinyl, no problemo
So, enough if the senior citizen comments please, just about to turn 53

I thought about the LaGrange when I was looking at the Kuzma, difficult to get to hear it at the time. Never heard a Nottingham analogue which might be worth checking out in terms of cost.

Ked convinced I need to audition it at greater length
I'm up for that
And in a direct face off w a Kuzma XL, that would be lovely (how transparent am I? )

Yes it is discontinued just looked on the Brinkman site. It is hard to compare high quality TTs, side by side, in the UK.
The new Kuzma DC motor has a very high torque apparently, gets the 22Kg platter up to speed in around 2secs.
It does have a good deep, clean sounding, bottom end, so to speak!

I used to drive through to Liverpool on my Weekends off to see the bands--the Cavern had this weird group called the Quarrymen--who screamed out "I''m Henry the VIII I am I am " nonstop all night

I heard they became famous though!!--

Liverpool is still good for music. And Port Merrion has a music festival now, in September, called No6 referencing the TV series that was shot there, The Prisoner. It had a big following in the UK.

I find strange people spend so much time debating strange motors for belt turntables and forget about other sound reproduction equipment, of better subjective sound quality, that also use motors in a much more delicate situation - reel to reel tape machine capstan motors! This motor is in direct contact with the tape, any fluctuation would be clearly audible.

We can easily get a Studer A80 capstan motor and the speed controller card for little money and built the best driving system for a turntable. BTW, the idea is not mine, it was used by Dietrich Brakemeier in his original Apolyt turntable and when I will have some free time in my Forsell Air flywheel .

How are you finding the comparison to the GG?

I really like the GG it can sound fantastic with good recordings and of course play material not available on vinyl. eg I bought a 2nd hand CD recently - Le Voyage Magnifique - Schubert: Impromptus D 899 & D 935; Allegretto, D 915; Klavierstucke, D 946 by Maria João Pires

Ripped to the hard drive and it sounds wonderful, powerful, full bodied, rich piano.

But then I bought - Peter Donohoe / Stravinsky* / Prokofiev* / Rachmaninov* ?– Three Movements From 'Petrushka' / Sonata No.6 In A Op.82 / Étude Tableau In E Flat Minor Op.39 No.5 LP in a charity shop for £1. Ultra soniclly cleaned it sounds totally convincing. But hey this is a 1982 EMI DIGITAL LP !!

Which sounds better? difficult to say, the vinyl probably sounds a bit more realistic, the growl of the lowest notes a bit more visceral. Without having a grand piano in the room - a difficult call.

I have a vinyl box set of Rachmaninov - Vladimir Ashkenazy, The London Symphony Orchestra, André Previn ?– Piano Concerto No. 4; Rhapsody On A Theme Of Paganini 1972 - recently obtained a hi res recording of the same, the digital sound richer and fuller.

However if I put on Wayne Shorter, standard BN pressing and compare it to the Hi res version - no contest the vinyl is so much better.

Dave, yes I am v much getting the fact that digital has come up so much, that for any given recording, you'll never now be truly sure whether analog will beat digital, or even Hi Rez will beat standard definition
Oh, to have commensurate analog and digital rigs, and all the time in the world to compare multiple formats
