Trinity DAC

Adam, I wonder if decent USB cable plus Regen = Totaldac cable?that will be a very interesting comparison when the Regen is ready next month. At $175, it is quite affordale to try for many people.

I have the same question. But then will a Totaldac USB + Regen outdo normal cable + regen?

Very good question! Or could it be conflicting as they may be doing much the same job?

Nothing beats experimentation, I guess. I eagerly await the consensus view. Should be a fun comparo.

I have signed for the Regen. Only test will tell.

Yes, but even that is not comprehensive as the Lampi was not properly broken in, he used a stock MB Pro with USB generic printer cable and non-ideal grounding cables. Thus, he would have to say that its not yet a fair comparison. When he gets a proper Transport and has the right connections with real burn it, then he could give a definitive answer. He likes both anyway.

Let me elaborate on this. Wisnon visited me in the weekend that Lukasz came over and demoed his Golden Gate dac in my system. You are possibly asking yourself: why would Audiocrack try out the GG dac in his system when he claims simultaniously on the WBF to be extremely satisfied with his Trinity combo. Well the reasoning behind this is the following: with pcm recordings I have heard no better combo than the Trinity pc & drive and Trinity dac. Btw, Dietmar made for me a special usb cable that I use for connecting the two. And just to be clear about this: I am not claiming that the Trinity combo is the best for pcm reply in the world but only that I have not heard anything that betters it. However, I have assembled quite a lot (about 5 terra) of dsd files. One of the companies that records exclusively in dsd is Channel Classics, a Dutch based company that (to my ears) produces beautiful recordings. Jared Sachs claims that his recordings should be played in dsd in order to appreciate their full beauty. So I wanted to try a dsd dac to find out whether this is true. Right now I am waiting for a (much better than the one Lukasz brought along) computer that will bring out the best of the GG dac. So in short, I will keep my Trinity combo because I love it and I am waiting for a better computer to combine it with the GG dac. At the moment I cannot say how the GG dac (that is not played in yet) compares to the Trinity combo.

Wisnon has a Golden Gate? I heard there are only a few in the market so far.

So, Wisnon has a Golden Gate ?

Wisnon listened to the GG that Lukasz brought with him in my set up. As far as I know he has not (yet) a GG dac.

OK, so Lukasz brought the GG. I'm curious how the GG compares to the Big 7. And to the Lampizator DSD DAC in my system... :)

Cannot help you in this regard because I have never heard the Big 7 nor the Lampizator dsd dac. Maybe Wisnon can share some light on this because he has heard probably all three of them, albeit the GG in a system he was not familiar with when he started listening. All in all we have listened to the GG for about eight hours in my Genesis set up.

In fact, A-Crack has the only released GG as of say 2 days ago. The others were soon to be delivered.

I dont have a GG, and what I heard from it on the 2nd day put it at least on par with the B7, but it was still unbroken and still to be fed properly. VERY huge potential.

GG is B7 with different components. Don't see why it shouldn't be better than the DSD dac, since isn't the DSD dac on L4 or L5 circuitry? The B7 blew away my L5 which is why I upgraded

Agreed Bonzo. My feeling exactly, but as I dont know for sure, I left myself wiggle room.

On Friday, I had a chance to see the Trinity PC/Drive in action for the first time. Dietmar himself came to Poland visit the Trinity distributor and has brought the transport with him.

I have to say - I liked what I have seen. The big white tablet you see on top of the Drive is a touch screen monitor - it is an option, you can use your flat screen TV instead. It is not really needed, maybe apart from setup (during which I was not present). You can browse all your music from an iPad, just like you do with Aurender, Linn or Jremote apps.

One thing I liked about the transport, is that fact it can create its own hotspot (it had a WiFi antena built in, which can be configured to work as a router) - so you can use the transport with the iPad, even when there is no Internet/WiFi in the room.

The transport can play all kind of files - PCM and DSD. It can also play any CD (but not SACD) inserted into the drive, via the slot loading mechanism.

The transport comes with a 8TB of internal storage as a standard right now - probably more than one could ever need.

I still would like to think that my hi-man PC server build could at least eaqual the Trinity PC/Drive in terms of sound quality, but also accept the fact that home brewing a hi-end PC server and dealing with all the setup issues etc., is not an option for most regular users.

You liked what you have seen but did you also like what you heard? The trinity dac with it's pc&drive is imho a state of the art combi soundwise, not only looking at the usual audiophile parameters but also from a musical standpoint of view.

Elberoth and Audiocrack, you both have access to the Lampi B7/GG and the Trinity DAC/PC Drive. You may be the only guys to be able to convey direct shootout a-b comparisons. I, and many others, would love to hear the results.

At the moment I am not able to make an a-b comparison Spirit. First of all I am waiting for a dedicated computer to be used with the GG dac. Furthermore the GG dac needs time to break in as it has only played for a few hours. Lastly, I am not going to use the GG dac in the same system so I need time to fully digest how it performs. But believe me, the Trinity combo is still state of the art with PCM recordings. This weekend a friend of mine, a technician and audiophile with very good ears, worked with me on the Genesis set up. We made another step forward and the Trinity combo shines as it has never done before. And there is still room for improvement because I have only connected the Trinity dac with a Thor se to the Tripoint emperor. So the Trinity pc & drive is not yet 'grounded' with the emperor.

Understood. I don't have the luxury or desire to run two systems, so it's a real shame and missed opportunity that you can't make a definitive a-b. Maybe Lucasz will be able to.
Btw, I am very sure Emperor/Thor SE will take Trinity to new heights - my Entreq S. Tellus/Apollo to my Eera Tentation cdp certainly did.

I just downloaded Chants du Sud et du Nord (ECM) on 24/44.1. I assume that's what you mean. Playing now - it is gorgeous. Hirundo Maris is a quintet founded by Arianna Savall dedicated in memory of her mother. Thank you for the introduction. Do you also have Vox Cosmica (2014), and if you do, is it also good?

I was introduced to Jordi Savall and Montserrat Figueras and much early music by another Genesis owner and explored to their daughter Arianna. Fabulous voice indeed and a great harpist.

Hi Gary,

I recently downloaded Vox Cosmetica, music of Hildegard von Bingen played by inter alia Arianna Savall and Peter Udland Johansen in 24/96 (Carpe Diem Records). A very transparent and direct recording. I love it although I suppose the (very spiritual) music on this recording might be somewhat 'more difficult' to grasp than the music on the Ecm recording we discussed earlier. To my ears: wonderful music that sounds on my system beautiful!
