What are you currently listening to (Classical)?

A dilemma has presented itself of late. More and more I kept hitting upon previously examined albums whenever I'd search before posting. 2016 was especially lively in here! My apologies should anyone have beat me to suggesting this album.

Here is a perspective from my wife. She is quite a good amateur pianist and 20+ years ago learned all five Beethoven concerti over a period of five years, playing all with local SF Bay amateur orchestras. She also competed in one of the earliest Van Cliburn amateur competitions, which at that time was only for piano concerti. She won one of the prizes which was to play a movement of their concerto with the Fort Worth Orchestra (she played the first movement of the Emperor). During the period of her learning the concerti, my job included finding different versions of the concerti for her to listen to. So we heard quite a few performances. Her favorite set of the piano concerti was Wilhelm Kempff playing with the Berlin Philharmonic, Ferdinand Leitner conducting. Recording also on DG, from the early 1960's. We have the vinyl box set. Much more recently I was able to get the set on 15ips 2 track tape, dubs from a set of the master tapes.

Every Pentatone RQR that I own sounds fantastic to me. They seem to combine the convenience of digital with the richness of analog.
This is has effectively been my experience as well.

Have you found anything in, I'll extend this out to three to be fair, the last few years on Pentatone worth a second listen? Rather a dry patch. Of the small number I've tried only one was and it's a CD only release.

Not too many come to mind. Well, I like Mari Kodoma's complete Beethoven Sonatas and her more recent release of Beethoven string quartet movements transcribed for piano. There might be others, but I'd have to paw through my collection! One that didn't do much for me, either sonically or musically, is Pierre-Laurent Aimard's new release of Beethoven's "Hammerklavier" Sonata. If it were the only one I've heard and owned, then it would be OK, but it's not that competitive in the open market. Interestingly, it's an RBCD, not an SACD. I hope they haven't abandoned DSD altogether.

If anything they have moved forwards by offering downloads in multiple rates of DSD. Just came as a surprise when two discs in a row from them were CD quality. Economics or recording experience nixing MCH in certain scenarios?

PENTATONE launches approximately 30-40 albums per year and aims to make recordings available in the highest possible audio resolutions. After having physically released on SACD exclusively in the past, the label now diversifies between standard CD and hybrid SACD formats for physical releases. Digitally, PENTATONE continues to explore new developments in hi-res audio, now offering releases in resolutions higher than DSD 64 when possible, thereby surpassing the maximum sound quality realisable on Hybrid SACDs.

Yeah, I don't know how popular MCH is these days...no doubt it's more expensive for the labels.

Fabulous, many thanks. The sonority of the XVIII century harpsichord is rich and precise in my room. Great performance and recording, available in Qobuz HiRez.
I'm trying to decide if I like it enough to buy the SACD, which probably sounds even better! (I listened to it on Qobuz.)
