Op.109-111 in wonderful performances and sound--back when Pentatone still recorded using DSD technology.

Mari has a very talented family. Her sister Momo is a fine pianist who has also recorded. Her husband, Kent Nagano, is a very well known conductor, having been music director of several top orchestras and opera companies. Their daughter is a professional pianist also. Larry

K.333, 475, and 457. Fine playing and very realistic sound on this SACD box set on the Iso-Mike label. From their site: "IsoMike™ (Isolated Microphones) is an experimental acoustic baffle system, to address the interference of intrachannel sounds that results in compromised fidelity. For these 4-channel recordings, the microphones were suspended on four arms, separated by IsoMike™ baffles. Most baffles absorb sound from mid- to high-range frequencies; lower frequencies are more difficult to absorb. Here, the unique shapes of the IsoMike™ baffles are advantageous. As lower frequencies flow around the heart- or egg-shaped baffles, they are scattered, effectively dissipating their energy. Eliminating line-of-sight between the microphones seems to lower some fidelity robbing cancellations, this reveals a layer of extreme detail and a sense of increased sensitivity. As such we took great care, therefore, to reduce the noise level within the auditorium during the recordings."

It looks a little funky, but it certainly produces great results!

I haven't listened to this in ages--wow! The playing is exhilarating, and the sound is very present and clear. For fun, I got out my favorite No. 38, Karajan's on a Japanese SACD, and compared the last movement. I guess an apt analogy would be the difference between driving a Corvette and a Continental: One is fast and lithe, the other smooth and comfy. I suppose it would depend on my mood. I enjoyed this one by Fischer so much that I just ordered vol.8,9,11, and 12 from HBDirect--good prices and very reasonable shipping.

Got quite a few Pentatone SACD's and DSD64 downloads, what recording technology are they using now instead of DSD?
PCM. I think it's a relatively recent change...the first one I noticed was Pierre-Laurent Aimard's new Beethoven recording from last month:

I like his Haydn Symphonies, particularly the early ones.

Is this available in Qobuz?
I can't find it with roon

On PrimePhonic - I use that for Classical, and Spotify for Other. I very much like PrimePhonic for its search capability, and general all around use. Qobuz is wonderful as well.

A very kind fellow just lent me a DAP full of 16/44 and a pair of headphones. Very enjoyable as well: Thanks John if you are reading!

This is currently playing - available on Primephonic :

ARSM I, Vol. 7. Balakirev Symphony 2 in D min.

Now this is a good recording, and very prettily done.

Shout out to the producer, balance engineer, editing and mastering of Bert van der Wolf

From Presto: "The Van Baerle Trio was founded in 2004 by the pianist Hannes Minnaar, violinist Maria Milstein and cellist Gideon den Herder. The name of the trio refers to the street where the three musicians met during their studies at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam."

Fischer’s Mahler symphonies are also strong throughout… and his Mahler 4 is hard to go past. His approach with Brahms and Bruckner is solid as well. He’s reliably good with many of the romantic composers.

First heard recently at Soundsmith - tracked down a decent copy and enjoying beautifully recorded human voices in real space.

I started with No.52 today--very good. The sound is less in your face than on his Mozart recordings, but it's still very good.

Different label. Nimbus was always known for their warm (sometimes, too warm) ambience.

Oh yes, different labels and very different recording techniques! The later symphonies seem to have more presence. Still, the earlier ones are not objectionable.

A year later with the Wiener Philharmonker.

Bit, only a bit and an emotional one at that, of a let down directly following the engaging and better recorded Piano Concerto No. 1. Prefer the Ashkenazy recording on HDTT of the Second with Mehta conducting the LSO.
