Maybe it’s approaching age but I’m enjoying Roger Norrington’s quicker tempi in the Brahm’s Symphonies a lot… maybe it’s just reassuring to know I may still be around when the Symphony finishes. Lively is good in this.
There is a lovely song like quality that comes through and brings a shade of light and an invigoration of life in them. A Brahms for spring perhaps. Worth listening to for sure.
Gentle incongruity employed to (Schubert's unfinished 10th Symphony) differentiate lapsing into the wholly unknown from fragmentary internal parts Berio undertook brushing a few notes into. Greatly rewarding example of how modern music could fit into the at times faded tapestry. To my ears.
This is now rapidly becoming my favorite of the Bach Cello Suites we have: Janos Starker, Pablo Casals, Pierre Fournier, Mischa Maisky.
There are 2 Yo Yo Ma Bach Cello Sonatas...this is the 2nd and much more recent one (2018). We found the first (1990) very, very technical but perhaps almost too much so. By contrast this later one seems to show not just maturity but the decades of work that he has done in Brazilian, Southern/Country and other explorations that create a freedom in his playing and interpretation...all the while showing off his virtuoso skill.
