Very enjoyable in a neo-Romantic vein. The composer is the older brother of famed baritone Dietrich F-D. Qobuz 24/96.

Same here at the very beginning
But did you give it some more time to digest with more than just the first track?

Either I adjusted quickly or the rest of the Album is more approachable than the beginning

Due to the lack of musical instruments, the orchestra for the premiere of the Yellow River Cantata consisted of only two or three violins and twenty-odd Chinese ethnic musical instruments. The rest were products of innovation: diesel barrels for bass strings and washbasins for percussion.

The full Western orchestra (plus traditional instruments), chorus, and soloists version below is given to displays of impeccable musicianship in a thoroughly modern version. I would much enjoy a live performance of the original incorporating the above makeshift instruments at such a high level using the original composition.

There are altogether four different versions of the Yellow River Cantata that had been performed in public. The first was the initial composition by Sinn Sing Hoi while in Yan'an. Accommodations were made for the lack of musical instruments at that time, as the orchestra consisted of only the violin, Chinese flute, harmonica, sanxian, erhu and dahu, along with a few percussion instruments.

This, too, is a little edgy, but I like it. (I have a pretty high tolerance for new music, but I do need a shred of melody here and there!) Qobuz 24/96.
