What is it about most audiophile cable designs that make cables sound like Tone Controls?

I would like to experience the music and could care less about the components.

I can appreciate that.

The point of my comment that "I want to hear my components" was about rejecting the need to use cables to tune the sound of my components. Granted our systems use cables and each wire has some character. I prefer a minimalist character that little differentiates itself from other minimalist character wires.

I think we're on the same page in this gear-focused forum. I did write this:

Music is an end in itself. Audio gear is not.
