What's Spinning Tonight?

To say I own, have listened to and have seen a lot of jazz records is an amusing understatement to those who know me. Nevertheless, I have to say I am highly impressed by many of the selections you've pulled out recently; some I have never seen in person and some I've never heard about. Kudos. I am thoroughly enjoying your posts. ..my wife and wallet... ...not so much.

I’m having a lot of fun with some new toys … the Clearaudio Double Matrix Professional Sonic and the Clearaudio Jubilee MC. I’m breaking in the Jubilee MC by going to my stacks and grabbing records that I’ve not played in a while. I go from the stack to the RCM, then to the turntable.

I’ve always cleaned my records in this way, ie, just in time before playing them. The Double Matrix Pro Sonic is the best RCM I’ve ever heard and I’ve used many RCMs since my first (VPI HW17) 40 years ago.

In a few cases I’ve gone from the Clearaudio Master Reference with TT2 and Jubilee MC directly to my high spec LP12 with Ekos SE and Lyra Etna Lambda for an immediate comparison. There are subtle differences, but for the most part these two vinyl playback systems are both winners. They defy comparisons, yet one is sprung with gimbal arm and the other is solid with linear tracker.

Just like the fact that espresso starts with your coffee, the music starts with your vinyl. Great recordings are going to trump all the gear you have in your arsenal.

This is a lot better than breaking in a cartridge by playing test records. It’s just great fun. The music rules!

This one was recorded in 1957 at Rudy Van Gelder’s house in Hackensack (before he gave up his Optometry practice and moved to Englewood Cliffs). This was reissued in 1978.
