But that is where you are wrong Dear Sir - it is my intention to have my ribbons & my box speakers. I have everything I need for 2 complete systems - my ribbons just need some more work ie remove the base cones - run the ribbons direct to an active crossover - then use OB base cones - similar to Pure Audio Project minus the mid range - tweeter.
Good luck on that Rob. Btw, were you the chap who wanted some info on my Duelunds and Lundahls upgrades to my Def 4s?
One & the same - whilst I currently have a pair of very good box speakers - there is no reason why they could not be Zu's somewhere down the track & Duelands are my cap of choice.

We see this in the real world with top notch reviewers like Jonathan having a whole stable of speakers: Magico being his favorite box, Avantgarde being his favorite horn, Voxativ being his favorite single driver speakers, CLX his favorite stat, MBL being his favorite omni, Magnepan being his favorite ... etc. And this is an "absolute sound" guy chasing that ultimate "real", so one would think there should be only one...
Caesar, I'm too busy enjoying and further refining my Zus to start at the ground floor w new spkrs, whether in addition to, or instead of my Zus.
I'm bearing down on final changes to eek out that last iota here, and I'm more driven to get this right. I also need to spend on a reasonable streaming solution, so funds for more spkrs doesn't really exist.
And unlike those who feel driven to run multiple tts/arms/carts, AND spkrs/spkrs types, luckily I'm not one.

Each of those guys have a system with a particular flavor and does things in a certain way. If they like that, God bless them. As long as they are aware of other options and tradeoffs, and deliberately chose their path, great.
Yet, if someone who likes a different flavor came over they wouldn't like their system.
Running a single system to chase a particular sound in one's imagination or running multiple systems for multiple interpretations of music is an individual choice.
So, yes, advising a guy who knows his taste, has evaluated many alternatives, has physical constraints, and/or a certain budget is silly.
Will all be capacitor coupled, IT coupled, direct coupled? EI core, double C core? You see my concern drawing too many conclusions from single examples of various types.
I’d have thought the observations will realistically pertain only to the particular amps trialled and how they specifically then respond to Zu speakers (and maybe some similarly characteristic box speakers at a stretch) and of course Phil’s listening preferences... and the room itself I spose, obviously the other components used and then the music chosen.
But still interested to see how the amps compare and what can be drawn from the survey.
It’s a massive scope but if it tells Phil about what works for him with his speakers then I can see why it’s worth it to go to the effort of this great amp explore. Sounds like fun at any rate. Hope you found an amp to make your Zus sing Phil. Epic effort.

Thanks for doing the hard work, and looking forward to your sharing of the results.
Out of curiosity, in your years with Zu, have you tried some famed amps like Kondo Ongaku, top Ayons, top Cary, top Wavac, Air Tight 300B, etc.,? My gut tells me some of those amps are probably very good for some speakers and certain tastes, but there is also a lot of marketing involved in reinforcing the mythology.
How do they mate with Zu? Thanks

You must be joking. Your concern does not concern me in the slightest. I have an RF problem with SET due to solar PV in one room, and I have a bass problem with SET due to a new speaker in another room. I have listened to a variety of alternatives plus have commissioned several circuit types implemented by the same amp builder, using some power tubes outside the KT88/90/100/120/150, EL34, 6550 realm. It's not an objective nor full-scope exercise by intent. It's me applying over 50 years experience with this realm to look into a few of the amplification white spaces that might inform where I land wrt replacing SET in my systems, and possibly solve some amplification problems others bring to me from time to time.
That's it. Most of the above will be represented. If it's not useful to you, I invite you to ignore it.
