A bit of google translate :
(The wrong info about the series filter i removed from the translation . and one price correction was done its 8600 not 8500.
In the shop is currently a Black laquer version)
The reason why Henk-Jan lives in Brussels is actually simple. He lives there because of his work. You don't really need to look for more behind it, but we thought it was a good attention grabber. And because he has enough space in his beautiful mansion, he can keep the disassembly and finishing of his speakers in-house. What you do yourself, you do better.Henk-Jan Netjes has loved good music for a long time, but also technology. His passion for hifi started immediately with a construction kit amplifier by John van der Sluis. He soon threw himself into a half-finished amplifier that he finished on his own into a full-fledged amplifier - which still works, by the way. When he discovered brands such as Avalon, Mark Levinson and Dynaudio at Mijn Hifi in the Netherlands, the hifi bug really got him. Unfortunately, the cost of those things at that time was rather disappointing. Not because they weren't worth it, but because Henk-Jan simply didn't have the money for it.
I want to make things like that too, but a lot cheaper, he thought. And so began his experimental search for designs and technologies. Andromeda Design Henk-Jan Netjes went shopping at Scan-Speak for drivers and tweeters, looked for companies that wanted to build and paint his speaker housings, designed his own crossover filter and screwed the whole lot together into full-fledged speakers. He didn't have to think too long about the name of his creations. Andromeda is a constellation that, with its nebula, evokes an air of mystery and elusiveness. Music is actually something elusive too. The same elusiveness with which Henk-Jan envelops his creations.
Andromeda Design Model 2 The Model 2 speaker that Henk-Jan Netjes delivers to us is a large 3-way speaker with a classic housing made of HPL, which stands for High Pressure Laminate. A very strong and durable sheet material that consists of several layers of paper that are soaked with phenolic resin and pressed together under high pressure and temperature. This results in a very hard and stiff material with excellent resonance damping properties. HPL is naturally white, but with a few layers of black high-gloss lacquer it looks particular Beautifull
So beautiful that Henk-Jan actually finds it a pity to put a nameplate on it. Although on our advice he is now considering a modest engraving. Every child has a name, right?
Minimum dampening .
Inside the sealed HPL housing is a slanted plate that provides a certain amount of dampening and that separates the bass compartment from the woofer and tweeter section. The housing is such that no other damping materials are actually processed in it.
Drivers:
The midrange drivers of the Model 2 come from Scan Speak.
With an elliptical voice coil and an equally elliptical 7-inch large paper diaphragm and magnetic gap, intended to minimize resonance problems of conventional drivers.
The soft-dome tweeter from Scan Speak is one of the best in the world and guarantees a natural sound, low distortion and excellent dispersion. The side-firing woofer in the Model 2 is an 11-inch Eton woofer with an advanced Nomex hexacone sandwich membrane consisting of a honeycomb construction, combined with Kevlar. Designed to produce accurate and powerful bass.
The efficiency of the Model 2 is 93 dB.
Filters :
The filter designed by Henk-Jan himself is a series filter.
A series filter is a simple and compact circuit with little energy loss that makes it possible to let or block certain frequencies before they reach a certain component. Cardas connectors On the back of the Model 2 are two high-quality solid rhodium plated connectors from Cardas Audio that can be used with both traditional banana or spade connectors.
Finite Elemente The speaker rests on three adjustable feet from Finite Elemente. More specifically, the Cerapuc feet with ceramic balls to dampen vibrations. "Tripods are much better for stable placement", says Henk Jan. "They are also much more efficient then spikes." With our old parquet floor, we can only be grateful for that. The Andromeda Model 2 is also available in all possible colors and lacquer finish. Positioning
We first give the Model 2 - which was only finished two days ago - the necessary time to acclimatize and play in. Although the first impressions, fresh out of the box, are already quite good. That creates expectations. After some shuffling in the width, we found the right positioning of the Model 2. According to Henk-Jan, the Andromeda is meant to be placed in a straight line because of the side-firing woofers. But if they are placed quite far apart, a little turning in may be necessary. Furthermore, they can be placed quite close to the wall because there is no bass port on the back. Listening Once the Model 2 is ready for use, we let our favorite music loose on it. Our first impressions are confirmed, the Model 2 delivers a warm and natural sound. This is mainly due to the high quality of the components used. But also to the HPL housing that differs in sound from a housing in traditional MDF. The bass of the side-firing woofers is deep but strongly controlled. The detail is enormous, at times even surprising. No details are lost in a recording. For those who prefer a little less, there is also a version of the Model 2 that is equipped with a ring radiator from the same stable and from the same high quality
The Model 2 sketches a spacious stereo image with a very precise placement of voices and instruments. The rock-hard housing prevents resonances from smearing with the walls of the cabinet. Which according to Henk-Jan is one of the assets of his Model 2. Intrinsic value For the record, we should mention that we switched off the room perfect module of the Lyngdorf amplifier to determine the intrinsic value of the Model 2, which is excellent by the way. It goes without saying that with room perfect and a measured Model 2 it becomes a lot better. The Model 2 can handle the many types of music that we present to it, and that is actually how it should be. Range and prices The Andromeda Design Model 2 costs 11,200 euros per pair. Its smaller brother, the Model 1 costs 8,600 euros. There is also a closed subwoofer in the pipeline, more about that later.
The XPE, the big brother of the Model 2 is an experimental speaker that is currently only built to order. Conclusion It is clear that Henk-Jan has paid a lot of attention to the design and construction of the Andromeda Model 2. This speaker may certainly be seen and heard, its performance is downright good. Although we must admit that it takes some getting used to the extreme detailing. What remains after that is enjoying a speaker that wants to measure itself against the big boys. To do this, Henk-Jan will have to start up a real marketing machine to give the necessary publicity to his speakers that certainly do not miss their target: delivering a lot of quality for less money. The Model 2 is of course not really a bargain, but it plays a strong example above its price tag. Perhaps this review can be a first step, an invitation to discover the Model 2.
Premiere for the BeneluxThe Andromeda Model 2 that we are testing here is nothing less than a premiere for the Benelux. We are the first to test it. If, after reading this review, you are curious to discover the Andromeda Design Model 2 with your own ears, you can go to Amplitude at Leuvensesteenweg 914 in 1140 Brussels. There is a unpainted ( actually the black laquer reviewed model ) version that gives you a glimpse of the specific structure of the HPL housing. Or just contact Henk-Jan himself via
