This is how life looks like in China:

Walk me through a trip to the store to buy food.

c.t.: I need to preface this by saying that, for people in our situation, I may be a little more paranoid than I have to be. So first I put on my outside clothes, which I keep in a little corner, and I put on my mask. Going downstairs, I make sure not to press the elevator buttons with my hands but to use my sweater or something. Steph doesn’t like that I do that; she wants me to carry a pen to press buttons. But you do have to make sure that you don’t use your hands to interact with the world.

Once you get your stuff, you go back upstairs. You change your clothes; you wash your hands. In order to make sure we’re not infecting the pump on the liquid soap, we first use some bar soap and then we can press the pump to wash our hands. Everything we bought, all the ingredients, all the packaging, we put it in its own quarantine. We put it all out on the balcony, we spray all sorts of sanitizers on it, and let it sit outside for a couple of hours before we bring it inside.

But after you touch the pump, you get soap on your hands and wash, so any contamination from pump will be washed away anyway.

Also, the risk of spraying on the food?

In Mumbai trains there is no danger of corona virus, because the virus is unable to squeeze in

Personally I think that the reason WHO told everyone not to use mask if you are not treating an infected patient or being a patient yourself is because they foresee the shortage problem for the medical staffs to access to the needed mask. Governments should first secure adequate supply of masks for medical staffs first and make sure all hospitals don't fall short on masks. The govt has all the power and resource to reach mask producers first. Pity all governments are shortsighted and fail to take immediate action at the first place. Personally again, I think advise to not wear mask is "a wrong advise for protecting the spread."

In real world, when time comes, some places will need to reuse the mask. Field doctors who live in the situation not sitting at clean clinic understand this. There are guidelines on what type of mask could qualify for reuse and how to sanitize them for reuse. Guidelines were given by doctors who are as intellectual as any in the rest of the world. Silly? No. Supply will be very limited. And many people are at poverty or in some small margin above poverty unlike me and members here who can afford a $10,000 equipment to pleasure our ears. So there is a hard real world outside this forum.

Mask is cultural? Yes. Partially cultural. But so as rap music 35 years ago with RUN DMC. It will not be perceived as cultural after international community becomes familiar and accustomed to it. After this corona thing goes away, the world wont feel awkward seeing people wearing mask in public. And feeling of cultural will be less. It could be come a great habit as I said before too. There could be less cases of influenza because people start to weak mask everytime they get sick.

For you guys adamant that you shouldn't wear masks, go ahead please and don't wear them but please don't go out, don't visit your elderly parents or grandparents, it's just not responsible. The WHO is an organisation that relies on member states. It tries not to make statements that will cause chaos or supply chain issues.

Maybe just a political decision to start testing, and being honest ;)
I think that the most of the Mediterranean countries at some point had tried to suppress the numbers on their effort to avoid panic and save the multi billion tourism summer industry, hoping that the increased spring temperatures would vanish the virus.

Numbers in Spain are exploding now to !

It is very easy to criticize leaders and their responses in hindsight. I cannot imagine the pressure and weight of the decisions they are confronting these days.
Totally agree Peter

Hindsight is such a wonderful thing

no intention for any kind of criticism

Yes but hindsight is available from experiences in Hong Kong, China, Korea and Taiwan.
For once I agree w you Ked. However I was pretty blasé about it too at the start. I guess the major in Jaws was pretty true to life.

Fatalities in UK double overnt, from 10 to 20.

Not directed at you Vienna. In a moment of frustration with all of this, I am making a general comment about what people are saying around me, not on this forum. (Well, those comments are deleted by the moderators, thankfully). Sorry to have insinuated anything different.

And lets not forget how fast this situation changes, nobody has taken precautions fast enough. We should all have done something when it started
in China, but it doesn’t sink in until it hits closer to home o_O

It is fascinating how the Asian countries have had a much more coordinated zero tolerance approach, and the infection rate is flattening dramatically, S Korea the particularly impressive one here.

Whereas in the West, UK, EU and US, Can, NZ and Aus etc, all disparate approaches and less likelihood for citizens to listen to their govts.

A genuine indicator of the West being tempramentally much worse suited to dealing w national emergencies. And I don't exclude myself from this.

Taiwan and HK too, being so close to China.
